Doe your DC's names "match" in terms of popularity?

DD has an unusual name. 10 girls were given that name in England and Wales in the year she was born, with the majority of them - I suspect - in Wales (it's a Welsh name, and we're in England).

I'm pregnant again with a DS and current favourite is Dylan. It's number 34 on the 2015 list, and I've heard of a few little Dylans where we are (although none in DD's nursery).

I'm quite keen that we go for names that are likely to be the only one in their class (although I know that's never guaranteed) and Dylan seems too popular for that. I also don't know if it's weird to have one really unusual name and one really common one. Will one DC feel hard done by?

Anyone else's DC have names of varying unusualness?

DS's name was top 100 in his year of birth 4 years ago but there are no others in his school and the nearest in age that I know of is in college. People comment on how unusual it is to hear the name on a child.

DD will be in next years figures but in 2014 it was about 1290 in the table, dropping to around 1400 in this year's table I think.

I chose on the basis of 1. Could they be serious professionals 2. Would they sound cool in a band 😎 3. Could they be professional surfers.

We've got two relatively popular names which are Lilly (which isn't as popular as being spelt with 1 'L') and a danny (boy)
Then we have a little patsy (which I know a lot of people dislike) and also a Josie. I've yet to come across any other children with those names.
Expecting another girl due in december and she'll be called Romy (which will probably give her the most unusual name in our family yet!)

Dd1s name averages about 15 babies a year.

Dd2s name was in the bottom 200s when she was born but its going up. The short version that she goes by is around about 130 but her full name is lower.

That said I have only ever come across 2 others with her name, once looking around a classroom in another school for her year and it was on the wall, but since they are both local catholic primary schools theres a good chance they will end up in the same year in the same high school. The other one I came across at work today. I have never come across another with dd1s name.

I have one ds with a very 'un'popular name and one with a very much of the minute name. I suppose you run the risk of looking like you're trying too hard to be out there if both names are in the obscure end of the scale, or, on the other hand, like you ran out of imagination for the second one.

They're just nice names though, so people can think what they like as far as I'm concerned! Go with what you like the best!

Dds were only ones in their school years not that they are unusual names just not of that year iyswim Dylan is a nice name it depends how unusual you want to go but i dont think children care if a sibling has a slightly exotic name than them.

Mine don't. Daughter has about 70 a year, son is in top 20. I wanted to match as you say but a name just came for him and it stuck.

Yes my dd1 ( now grown up) was born overseas and we gave her a lovely traditional english name, not heard another one in the country we lived then ( which is in the commonwealth so english names usual) came back to uk and every other child has the name !!! DD2 has very traditional English name ( she was born here in uk) and very very rarely here of another one...she loved to tease her older sister about her unusual name vs her sister's 'common' name....unfortunately dd2's name is now being picked as an up and coming popular name ..she is incensed..

DS's name was around top 50 when he was born and top 30 now.
DD's name is around 1200 with the celtic spelling we have used and around 900 with the more usual spelling.

Having matching 'popularity rankings' was never a consideration for us (obviously!)

My 2 DD's have popular names, my 2 DS's don't (popular in the US tho ).

DD has a very unusal name where as DS has a very popular name. Never really thought about it just went for names we liked and that sounded right together.

Dc1s name was 84th most popular in the year he was born.
Dc2s was 3rd

So opposite ends of the top 100 but neither massively unusual

I've got twins - one has a consistently top ten name, the other one doesn't even feature on the lists! Still no doubles in the school year though even with a top 10 name.

A number 34 name is really not THAT popular/common. Chances are high that he WOULD be the only boy in his class with that name.

Yup, all three boys names in the top ten at the time,. Although DS3's has dropped to low teens now. I am not bothered about being original, strikes me as as a form of vanity ( I may have been affected by Church of Scotland Sunday school).

Dc1, 2 and 3 all have top ten names. Dc4 has a made up name so is probably the only one.

I accidentally named both my children massively popular names. dd's name has been popular for a long time, while ds's went from obscurity to top ten the year after he was born and has pretty much stayed there ever since. If we had stayed in the UK he would have been one of many. But we emigrated and where we live now his name is very unusual. It's not been an issue.

I have a extremely unusual name (never met another, or anyone who has met one either) my siblings have much more mainstream names. I don't believe it's been an issue.

Not sure where either of my boys' names are on the UK list but pretty sure they're somewhere in the late 100's for DS1 and probably somewhere in the late 500's for DS2.

But surnames for first names, turns out DH and I both like them - so they match pretty well.

DD was the only one in the year with her name, not sure if any have been born since. (UK) Very unusual.

DS has a really popular name if you're in the US but because we're UK no-one's ever met one

I don't think I could use a top 10 name now because they'd actually feel like the odd one out

I always think it's odd when you get sibling whets one has a fantastical name and one has a bog ordinary name ...
Geronimo and Emma
Vivaldi and Luke
David and Septimus
John, Lucy and Stardust-Twinklebum

But if you have two proper Welsh names that 'match' i don't think it matters how popular they are or if there's a difference.

My DS's name is always top 5. My DD is much less popular. It was around number 135 last year. I just went with what I liked rather than worrying about popularity.
