To go with Antigone, Rupert and Lochlan...

1. Carla Bruni. I believe that Aurelien is the name of her first child.
2. The usual spelling of the Scottish name is Lachlan. It means 'stranger from the land of the lochs'. In many parts of Scotland it's pronounced LACH-lann. I know several people called Lachie. Lochlann is mostly Irish or Australian, I think. But perhaps othrs will correct me.

Yes, you are right We chose the Irish spelling of Lochlan (much to Scottish Gran's disbelief!) because we intended to shorten it to Lock (my Husband proposed at a local Lock!) It didn't matter in the end, as his siblings decided he was Lucky, and Lucky he has always been!

It is very similar to 'Orwellian', or am I mispronouncing it?

I like it but I'd personally steer clear of anything with an accent in it. I know several Zoes, Chloes (two dots) and Esmees (acute) who despair of their diacritics because they're sometimes not recognised or they are recognised but written wrongly, and they can never remember which "version" of their name is recorded where.

That said, I love Aurelien/Aurelian without the accent. You could still use the "ray" pronunciation if you prefer it.

Thanks jooni! Yes I think you may be right it would prove awkward. It is because I love the 'ray' pronunciation but I suppose people will take our lead. Thank you so much! I have been studying Classics for 16 years now. Antigone was my first experience of a kick ass feminist! I read it at 16 and decided if I ever had a Daughter she would be Antigone. She goes by Tiggy usually.

It's a nice name and I would almost definitely retain the accent if you want it to be pronounced correctly.

I agree that adding in the accent is asking for trouble - people won't use it and computer systems won't recognise it.

OP - just coming back to say that 'Lucky' is a good nickname.
As a classicist, you'll know about (Marcus) Aurelius of course. The Latin version gets rid of the accent difficulty, but perhaps you just prefer the sound of Aurelien. Your choice, obviously!

I prefer Aurelius to Aurélien to be honest, alas Husband has a lisp (also the reason Paris was relegated to a middle name previously!) so it's out
