Noah - for a girl?

Hi, thoughts on the name Noah? There's a female Noah in the bible, so it's definitely unisex.

Noah Kate?

Thanks!

Noah is a bearded man

Not many people will know the female version

BernadetteMatthews · 29/08/2016 08:22

Noah is a horrible name, male or female. I'm hoping it's so overused that it crashes and burns soon. So many Noah 's at school, it's like all these parents wanted something 'different' and they've all picked the same.

If I saw Noah written down on a list, I'd think boy though.

aisatsana · 29/08/2016 12:48

But I don't see the issue with people thinking she's a boy, they'll realise soon enough when she talks/wears a dress etc! And there are plenty of unisex names out there

This is not a unisex name though.

If you see my post from previously in the thread, you might get an idea of the issue it can create to give your daughter a boy's name. I knew an adult Stevie and she hated it.

shouldwestayorshouldwego · 29/08/2016 12:59

I think that she and others might wonder whether you had really wanted a boy and so called her a boy's name.

Seekingmiracles · 29/08/2016 13:43

But Noa IS a girls name! People are making far more of a thing of the unisex name thing than it is. If she uses Noa (that spelling) it's a girls name, just like Leslie is female. It's not like she's calling her Stephen or Benjamin.
And people use ALL kinds of things to name their children these days that are far weirder. I think we're now in an age where anything goes. The baby could end up hating what ever name it has. I for one would HATE to be called Amelia/Ava/Olivia because if I was born now I'd be the equivalent of the Sarah's and Laura's of my generation.

Seekingmiracles · 29/08/2016 13:45

I think that she and others might wonder whether you had really wanted a boy and so called her a boy's name.

Likewise a child named something top 10 might think the parents lacked imagination, or child named River for example might think their parents were drunk when they named them. Doesn't make the name a bad name. Each to their own.

Newmanwannabe · 29/08/2016 13:51

I'm a midwife and have never see a girl Noah. Personally I don't like it for a little girl. Do really like Norah though

Mooey89 · 29/08/2016 13:54

At secondary school we had a new pupil starting. Leigh.

Everyone assumed it was a girl.

He was a boy. It was a big deal at the time and he was bullied for it, the teacher behaved badly and the seating plans had to be rewritten! And that is a name that really is commonly used for both sexes.

I have a very unusual name, only ever met one other in this country... Because of that most people accept it as feminine BUT I have still a fair few times had 'but that's a BOYS name!'

Please, please don't saddle the your daughter with this. I'm very sorry, but it is ridiculous. Just looks like you are trying to make a point.

Noa, is nice.

somekindofmother · 29/08/2016 14:14

I think it's horrible for a girl.
I also think it's mean to call a girl a widely accepted boys name. like calling a girl Trevor. or a boy Lily.
i also think it has undertones of 'we wanted a boy so much we called our girl a boys name'
she'll likely resent it. at least at some point in time. probably after the umpteenth time someone has assumed she's a boy, possibly a boy who wears dresses even, so dressing as a girl won't necessarily make it clear to people. it's a lifetime of agro for her.

Alisvolatpropiis · 30/08/2016 12:42

No.

TotallySpies17 · 30/08/2016 12:45

I like it :-)

TotallySpies17 · 30/08/2016 12:46

(And OP clearly doesn't want a bloody debate on whether it's a girl's name!)

callipygiana · 30/08/2016 12:52

It's not unisex. In Hebrew, the boys' name is pronounced Noach (the ach pronounced like the ch in Loch). The girls' name is Noa. They have different meanings. They just came to sound the same in English because we don't have the "ch" sound.

Myu5ername · 30/08/2016 13:11

I adore Noa for a girl and only reason I won't use it is because my godson is Noah so would be too confusing for our network of friends.

Noah in the bible was a male
Noa in the bible was a female
And like the poster above mentioned the male version should actually be pronounced with 'ch' so to name a girl Noa as we are all used to hearing it would be perfectly legitimate.

Jackie0 · 30/08/2016 13:18

People will assume you don't know how to spell .

SoupDragon · 30/08/2016 13:22

And OP clearly doesn't want a bloody debate on whether it's a girl's name!

The she shouldn't have asked for opinions because that's what she got - opinions.

TotallySpies17 · 30/08/2016 13:46

That's NOT what she asked for! Whether you like the name- up for debate. Whether it's a girls name - not up for debate.

SoupDragon · 30/08/2016 15:15

thoughts on the name Noah?

And guess what? People gave their thoughts! What a shocker eh?

SoupDragon · 30/08/2016 15:16

If whether the child is a boy or a girl is irrelevant, then it wouldn't have been mentioned.

SoupDragon · 30/08/2016 15:18

The OP is long gone anyway. One Thread Wonder.

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 01/09/2016 09:13

OP, come back and face the music, you did ask us, after all.
People are offering their opinions, some you will like, ignore the ones you don't.
Personally, Noah for a girl, is not for me.
How about Noelle, or Nora.

MadrigalElectromotive · 01/09/2016 11:41

No. Dreadful. Use Noa instead.

DreamOrange · 01/09/2016 12:03

Nope, Soup, still here.

No offence, but do you have an extremely simple group of friends?

In my group of best friends that has been together since age 5/11 until adulthood, 3 of the 9-10 of us have the same name (I'm one of them), and 2 others share another name. None of us have ever been confused.

Myu5ername · 01/09/2016 12:53

Ha ha monkeygone - yes we're all stupid Grin
