Noah - for a girl?

Hi, thoughts on the name Noah? There's a female Noah in the bible, so it's definitely unisex.

Noah Kate?

Thanks!

To everyone saying that Noa is the female spelling - Noa can also be a boy's name. I know more boys called Noa than girls.

But both are unisex, just these days more common as a boy's name.

To me Dylan is a boy's name, but plenty of girls are called it! Likewise Meredith.

If you like it OP then use it.

septembersunshine · 24/08/2016 08:02

I'm not liking it for a girl so much. Reason being is this: Noah sounds a lot like 'Do you KNOW HER?' Know her - Noah or Noa. Ummm.... that's what I hear everything I hear the name Noah. Plus it would actually be a her if it was used as a girls name.

Kate Noa is lovely! Noa for the first name if you really love it but I would defiantly think twice. Most of her name would spell the name 'No' (with either spelling...that would put me off).

BikeRunSki · 24/08/2016 08:03

A quick google shows that
1 - "Noah" is derived from the Hebrew "Noach", so "Noah" is not even how the name "should" be spelt if you are going back to biblical references.
2 - Noa has a different origin, meaning and pronunciation in the original Hebrew.

I'm a teacher so I see a lot of children's names. I've never seen a boy called Noa, I've never seen a girl called Noah.

Use it if you want but be prepared for your daughter to be constantly telling people that she is not a boy.

DownWithThisSortaThing · 24/08/2016 08:06

Your title is 'Noah - for a girl?' So people are answering that no, they wouldn't use it for a girl. If you want to use it then use it, but don't ask a question and then get huffy because you don't like the answer.

BertrandRussell · 24/08/2016 08:09

"NOAH (boys): Up from 225th to 11th
NOAH (girls): Unchanged at 0"

From the Darkgreener baby name website.

SharonfromEON · 24/08/2016 08:13

I wouldn't use noa or noah...not just because if the spelling...You phone up for a hair appointment name noa/noah expecting a boy...no matter what the bible said most people in this country expect a noah to be a boy..

BertrandRussell · 24/08/2016 08:13

I always wonder, when life can be tough enough, why people make choices that might make life even a tiny bit harder for their child than they need to be.

My niece is 40 and has a male name. She was left stranded at an airport recently because the driver sent to meet her assumed she had missed the plane because there were only women waiting.......

TequilaBlockingBird · 24/08/2016 08:15

Call her Noa.

Or Norah - also biblical

SpecialAgentFreyPie · 24/08/2016 08:17

What SoupDragon* said. Just use the female spelling. I personally don't like it, but picking a name and insisting it be spelled the wrong way, then getting upset people assume it's a boy... Just bizarre. Confused What an odd reaction.

PuppyMonkey · 24/08/2016 08:18

Starting a thread called "Noah - for a girl?" kind of invites the debate you say you don't want to have, op. Grin

Don't like the name for either sex personally tbh.

JudyCoolibar · 24/08/2016 08:18

Are you that entrenched in keeping the h that you want to subject your child to years of misunderstandings and tedious explanations? Frankly I don't think it's a great name for a boy, but it's awful for a girl.

If you can't contemplate Noa, think of another name. Maybe make Kate the first name instead of the second?

JemimaMuddledUp · 24/08/2016 08:19

Purple I'm in Wales and Noa is how Noah (as in man in bible with ark) is spelt in Welsh. I know at least 8 boys called Noa.

Everyone's circle of reference is different. To me Noa is a boy, just because that is my experience. It doesn't mean that Noa isn't a perfectly valid girl's name.

Turn that around and there is no reason why Noah isn't a perfectly valid girl's name either.

I actually do not even like Noah for a boy.

SpecialAgentFreyPie · 24/08/2016 08:23

Slow typer. Everyone else said it better. It's all well and goof to be Right On and Oh So Ahead Of The Times, but she's the one who has to live with it.

OddBoots · 24/08/2016 08:25

"I wasn't asking for a debate about if it's male or female"

If this is annoying for you now, imagine how your daughter will feel with a lifetime of it. I like it as a girl's name but regardless of if the debate is welcomed or not she will have people throughout her life questioning why she has a boys name. Other people's reactions are something you can't change.

BikeRunSki · 24/08/2016 08:40

I'd avoid Noa(h) of any spelling right now, there are just so many small ones about.

I know 5 boys named Noah, all under 5.
I have met 2 people named Noa, both women who will now be in their 40s.

Noah/Noa spellings are established conventions, and "Noah" at least is not the original Hebrew spelling anyway, if you are concerned about authenticity.

prettypinklady · 24/08/2016 08:54

What a lovely name!SmileSmile

...for a boy.

BikeRunSki · 24/08/2016 09:17

We've had this discussion before

JessieMcJessie · 24/08/2016 10:04

You do know that the Bible was not originally written in English and that the spellings of names and translations of concepts are subject of huge debate (eg was Mary actually a virgin or is the word just used to mean "young girl"?). The fact that in some English edition of the Bible a female character's name was written as "Noah" means absolutely nothing. It could just be a typo!

Not quite sure what you were hoping to get from this thread to be honest. Titling it "Noah-for a girl?" then denying that you wanted to discuss whether it was a suitable name for a girl is a bit bonkers.

People will probably look at her and assume she said "Norah".

EssentialHummus · 24/08/2016 10:19

I came on to say what Jessie said - the O.Testament would've been in classical Hebrew then probably Aramaic.

Anecdotally, I know lots of Noas and Noahs - I'm Jewish and as you can imagine it's a popular name for us - and in English it is almost always Noa for a girl.

harderandharder2breathe · 24/08/2016 11:28

No don't do it to your daughter

MrsGsnow18 · 24/08/2016 20:09

I personally don't like biblical names, that's just my preference.
I do like unisex names though.
I actually prefer Noah for a girl than a boy.
But I think the name Noah is way overused at the moment in the UK so that would defiantly put me off even if there aren't as many female Noah's. She's still be one of many in her year at school probably.

moomoo222 · 24/08/2016 20:15

I also think of it as a boys name, and a very popular one at that (I know 5 and there are at least 3 in my DS2's school year which is only 2 classes), might be tricky for her if there are more than one in her year at school and the rest are all boys? Oh and it makes me think of a beardy bloke on a big boat ;)
