Just Elizabeth

Do you know any young Elizabeth(es?) who just go by Elizabeth rather than any of the associated nn?

If you were writing a book, what would the Elizabeth character be like?

I love the name but am wondering if it is too old-fashioned or no nonsense.......

I don't think it's old-fashioned, particularly. It's a classic timeless name, like Sarah, Emily, etc.

I don't know any young ones (not necessarily because it's not a used name, I just don't know that many kids, and most of the ones I do know are boys!) but all the adult ones I know go by shortened versions. I think that is absolutely inevitable with a long name like Elizabeth.

I love the name. I think it's strong and won't date. One of the advantages is that there are so many ways of shortening it that if she wants a short form she'll have no trouble finding one that suits her own identity as she grows up.

I do write, and one day I will call a character Elizabeth. I haven't had a heroine yet who really suits the name and I don't want to waste it on the 'wrong' character. When she does come along I expect she'll be determined, capable of fun, grown up.

I know three children under ten who are called Elizabeth & known by their full name. A 4yo at DS' nursery, a 10 yo at DD's school, a 6yo at DD's ballet. It is a lovely name and seems to work on them at all ages.
I know at least half a dozen through school, nursery, brownies & friends who are Elizabeth on their birth certificates and called it sometimes but are usually known by an abbreviations (2 X Lizzie, 2 X Libby, 1 X Eliza, 1 X Beth, 1 X Lily).

So can Elizabeth be 'fun loving'? I know loads of people with Elizabeth as a middle name but have only ever met on woman going by the full name who was a lecturer at my old Uni, she seemed very no nonsense and a tad dull and stern, which has coloured my view on Elizabeth a tiny bit but mostly it sounds and looks beautiful...

We nearly called DD Elizabeth, but that was really because we liked all the shortened versions. Thinking about it now I don't particularly like the full version... It's a lot of syllables for one name and maybe a wee bit stuffy maybe, in my very personal opinion.

I do know one Elizabeth who absolutely insists on the full name (not that I ever tried to shorten it). She's in her thirties I think.

Should say the Elizabeth I know is very witty and quite fun. I don't think the name particularly suits her though if I'm 100% honest - she'd really suit Eliza I think, but she hates it!

I'm an Elizabeth and I hate it, always have done. I get called Liz most of the time although it's not a diminuative I've ever chosen as I hate that too!
It has never suited me, so I'm completely biased against it!

I know an Elizabeth and her life was made a bit of a misery as a child as children used to gang up on her as she was 'posh'. (1990s peculiar class bashing.) I remember she went on holiday with us and told everyone her name was Stacy while we were there.

She ditched Elizabeth when she was a teen and is known as a shorter version.

my sister name was elizabeth she was fine with had happy teens in the 90s .Her nickname was lizy but used her full name for jobs and paperwork

I come from a family of Elizabeth's. It is a classic very normal English name. No steriotype as it gos from queen to delinquent ( glares at nightmare cousin Elizabeth).
I know 4 all ages who use the full Elizabeth and approx 10 who are Liz, Beth, Betty, Eliza etc.

I think it's beautiful. My mum is Elizabeth and our daughter has it as a middle name (her first name is after DPs late mum).

The Queen is said to be good fun among her close friends and family, too. If you only see someone's public face, as with your former lecturer, you don't get a full sense of their personality.

I know a 4 year old Elizabeth who goes by her full name. She is very sweet. It may get shortened when she goes to school, but time will tell.

I know two little Elizabeth - both around two years of age. One is called Elizabeth and the other Lizzie.

I nearly called DD Elizabeth, nn Beth, but decided against it as her middle name was always going to be Mary for family reasons and Elizabeth Mary sounded too regal. I'm glad I didn't, as while I still love the name, Beth (which I associate with gentle, quiet souls, probably because of Little Women), it wouldn't suit my DD at all. I think we'd have ended up going with Eliza as a nn instead, as that would seem to suit her inquisitive, chatterbox personality far better.

My eldest is Elizabeth. I always use her full name and it was used all through school. She now goes as Liz which is ok - her choice (in her mid 20's)

She is very fun loving and adventurous and brave and generally amazing. I wanted a strong name for her - she is actually named in honour of Elizabeth Tudor.

I have a 3 year old elizabeth (goes by full name) who is great fun :-) I love the name and think it suits my happy, strong willed DD perfectly.

How about Lily or Lizzie as a nn. DD1 is an Emelie though, not sure if that would work. She never gets shortened to Millie but either Emmie or Mia for some reason.

Elizabeth is a beautiful, classic and timeless name.
I prefer Beth, as opposed to Liz.

I have four year old Elizabeth.
She is hilarious, cheeky, clever and very independent.

She gets Elizabeth or my pet name for her is lillibut (outs self) or Betty boo, lizzie loo. Whatever really :)

No doubt she would pick her own nickname as she ages which was my intention for her. I think she suits lizzie as she is a live wire and witty.

Beth to me conjures up gentle and quiet

any views on Lily as nn for Elizabeth with a sister called Emelie (french spelling as DH is half french and it is a possibility that we might live in France at some point)?

Er, if she's brought up in a happy home and given lots of fun, then yes.
