I love them both. Angus probably just edges it for me.

PitilessYank · 15/08/2016 05:09

Both names are very nice. In the US, where I live, though, many people would think of Black Angus Beef. Is that a term that is used where you are?

seven201 · 15/08/2016 05:13

Hannah. I take it you're Scottish?

seven201 · 15/08/2016 05:13

Bloody autocorrect. Hamish not Hannah!

KoalaDownUnder · 15/08/2016 05:27

We've had this! This exact thread, v recently. Not trying to imply that you're not allowed to ask again, of course! Smile

Hamish was my vote. Only because Angus very overused here (Aus).

Cami12 · 15/08/2016 05:29

Seven201, My parents are both Scots and one of DH's parents is Scottish. However I don't think you need to be from or in Scotland to use these names, that's a bit literal.
PitilessYank, Angus cattle are originally from the regions of Aberdeenshire and Angus. That's where the name Angus comes from, not vice versa. It's an old and traditional name /region first and foremost. I guess in the States the beef is the only connection you would have with the name? In short, not a concern for me.

Fwiw, I don't really think of Angus cows at all.

I think both names are lovely and stand alone very well, across cultures.

Cami12 · 15/08/2016 05:32

Koaladownunder - just searched for it and nothing similar came up? What was the result??Smile

😲 One of those is my brother's name and the other is my grandfather's. My DB often got called by GF's name, even by people who'd never met our GF (we hadn't either - he died before we were born).

They're both great names.

ChorusLine69 · 15/08/2016 05:34

Hamish gets my vote - love this name

Cami12 · 15/08/2016 05:35

Thanks koala!

We're not Scottish either - well, if you go back several generations, you'd find ancestors who were.

Clearly you don't need to be Scottish to use the names!

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 15/08/2016 05:38

Angus

KoalaDownUnder · 15/08/2016 05:43

Oh - the result was a pretty even split, if I remember correctly!

Angus perhaps slightly edged it, but there was a lot of love for both.

Hope this works - am crap at links!

An Angus I guess would become a Gus.. Are there any nicknames for Hamish? I think I prefer Hamish.

KoalaDownUnder · 15/08/2016 07:32

My friend has a 5-year-old Angus who has become Gus or Gussy. I don't like it, tbh.

The Hamishes I know are nicknamed Haim.

KoalaDownUnder · 15/08/2016 07:33

(Don't like Gus/Gussy, I mean - Angus is great)

Schmoochypoos · 15/08/2016 07:36

Hamish - love it

YouMakeMyDreams · 15/08/2016 07:43

In Scotland Hamish often get things like Hammy.
I've always liked Angus though. Exh didn't like it though.

LunaLoveg00d · 15/08/2016 08:25

I know boys called both names - we're in Scotland. I wouldn't make the "beef" connection unless your surname was Aberdeen. Either name would be great.

Sophronia · 15/08/2016 09:54

Angus, but both are nice.

seven201 · 15/08/2016 10:06

Oh sorry I didn't mean you had to be Scottish. I just wondered was being nosey as they both were Scottish names. My daughter has a Scottish name and we're not Scottish!

MrsGsnow18 · 15/08/2016 10:32

I like both, also love Magnus.
Prob prefer Hamish, it's extra lovely in my opinion.

0pti0na1 · 15/08/2016 15:22

Hamish
