How would you pronounce Eira?

We love the name Eira but don't want her to have to correct people on how to pronounce her name her whole life... so thought a straw poll would help us decide how intuitive it is.
Thanks so much!

Aira
Am I right?

GastonsPomPomWrath · 02/08/2016 13:00

Eye-ra?

Dizzydodo · 02/08/2016 13:00

Ear-ah?

Eminybob · 02/08/2016 13:01

Air-ra

Sadik · 02/08/2016 13:01

More or less A - ra - it's a pretty name, though I must confess the only one I've known was a goat born in the January snows!

IlPorcupinoNilSodomyEst · 02/08/2016 13:01

Me too - Air A. Does it mean anything?

DramaAlpaca · 02/08/2016 13:02

Air-a

Savidog · 02/08/2016 13:03

Air ah....assuming it's coming from a similar root to Eire one of the Gaelic names for Ireland.

DropYourSword · 02/08/2016 13:03

Eye-ra.

But only because I know an Eira and that's how she pronounces it.

NaughtToThreeSadOnions · 02/08/2016 13:03

Ahh my nanny's name (almost definately outs oneself)
Are you Welsh op?
I think, and I say think it's Eire, like the Gaelic name for Ireland. But my nan was always called Clara or Janey, definately completely outs myself if any of my family are on here. So I think I've heard Eira pronounced about once in my life.

I know I always found it funny cos my maternal grandparent are Irish, so I'd get confused between Eira and Eire!

PotatoBread · 02/08/2016 13:05

Eye-ra

Would wobble between that and Ear-ra and wouldn't be confident that I was pronouncing it right though!

Hamsolo · 02/08/2016 13:06

I'd go Air-ra too. Like Eire.

SchnitzelvonKrummsverylowtum · 02/08/2016 13:10

I know two Eira's - one pronounces it Eye-ra and the other Ay-ra.

I think Ay-ra is more correct, but I'm not sure.

dottyaboutstripes · 02/08/2016 13:14

I've known some Eiras and they were all eye-ra

mamas12 · 02/08/2016 13:18

Its a pretty Welsh name denoting snow
The ei is pronounced a as in May and then ra
Eira

pollygarterispretty9 · 02/08/2016 13:19

Eye-ra Welsh word meaning snow

bazingasheldon · 02/08/2016 13:21

I'm Welsh and every Eira I have known pronounces it. Eye-ra

MrsJoeyMaynard · 02/08/2016 13:24

Eye-ra

coolaschmoola · 02/08/2016 13:24

A-ra

Doilooklikeatourist · 02/08/2016 13:27

Eye ra
Had a great aunt named Eira

Stevefromstevenage · 02/08/2016 13:27

My initial thought is Eire like Ireland but I am not sure. If it is Eire I must admit I prefer the name Eirn (Eireann) which is reasonably common here too.

FlyDragonfly1 · 02/08/2016 13:34

My Great Aunt was named Eira; she pronounced it 'Eye-Ra'. She was from a very small Welsh village in the Beacons.

MitzyLeFrouf · 02/08/2016 13:40

Ear-a
Eye-ra
Air-a

Would it expect it to be one of those. But wouldn't know which.

BendydickCuminsnatch · 02/08/2016 14:42

The same as the name Ira. Makes me think of an old man who looks like the man from Up Blush

Lolimax · 02/08/2016 14:44

Agree with Welsh people. South and West Wales (though I've only really heard the name in west Wales)....eye-ra.
