How would you pronounce Eira?

We love the name Eira but don't want her to have to correct people on how to pronounce her name her whole life... so thought a straw poll would help us decide how intuitive it is.
Thanks so much!

Ay-ra. A Welsh cousin of mine is called Eira, it's lovely.

BeautyGoesToBenidorm · 02/08/2016 14:50

Ah, you're the OP who originally liked Ira, aren't you?

dottyaboutstripes · 02/08/2016 14:52

Yes I'm from West Wales, so Eye-ra is all I've heard

littlepooch · 02/08/2016 14:53

My first thought was eye-ra.

timelytess · 02/08/2016 14:59

Eye-ruh. I knew one. Lovely woman.

SharingMichelle · 02/08/2016 15:02

Either Air-a or Eye-ra

dontmakemedothis · 02/08/2016 15:08

My immediate thought was A-ra, pronouncing the ei as it is in veil, reins, eight, etc.

Kewcumber · 02/08/2016 15:13

Eye-ra (as others have said)

Names that people can;t pronounce by reading them in the country you live in aren;t generally a good idea in my experience especially if you have a child who gets self conscious about explaining the pronounciation to EVERYONE! First hand experience of my (living in England) niece Cerys who most commonly got called "Cerise" and who was mighty thankful when Cerys Matthews became famous!

Alisvolatpropiis · 02/08/2016 15:21

Eye-ra.

Am Welsh though.

maamalady · 02/08/2016 15:33

Eye-ra, as a family friend named Eira pronounced her name. She was a lovely lady (now sadly deceased) and it's a beautiful name.

Shinyshoes2 · 02/08/2016 15:35

Ear rah

Pinklily1 · 02/08/2016 18:54

I'd say Eye-ra.

I think it's lovely.

Clebaby · 02/08/2016 19:35

Thank you soooo much for replies!

Yes we posted before as we love the spelling Ira but worried about I.R.A connection!

Eira however is also lovely and represents our Welsh and Muslim backgrounds.

Seems like about half of people will pronounce Eira wrong...but half right! So we are still keen on it.

The other final spelling is Iyra..

MrsJoeyMaynard · 02/08/2016 19:57

I'd guess at ill-ra as a pronunciation for Iyra.

It doesn't look like it should be pronounced in the same way as Ira.

maamalady · 02/08/2016 22:29

Iyra looks to me like Lyra without the capitalisation, but knowing it's an I rather than an L then yes, eye-ra pronunciation. I imagine you'd always have to spell it for people though, which Eira might not suffer from as much.

OhtoblazeswithElvira · 02/08/2016 22:33

Ay (as in May)-rah
Am in a Welsh-speaking area in North West Wales.

Eira Wen = snow white / white snow

Polyethyl · 02/08/2016 22:38

My Pembrokeshire granny said her name as Eye-rah, so when I named my daughter that's how I pronounce it.
However 2 welsh speaking friends wince when they hear it as they insist it is Ay-rra.

But my granny's eye-ra version is what I use.

Ffion3107 · 02/08/2016 22:38

Eyra
Ey as in 'they' or 'grey'
That's how we pronounce it in North Wales. How would you pronounce it, OP?

MyNewBearTotoro · 02/08/2016 22:40

I grew up in South West Wales and knew a few women called Eira, and of course it is the Welsh word for snow so regularly heard it used in conversation too.

I've always heard it pronounced with ei as in eight. Ay-ra.

Surprised at all the people in Wales saying they'd pronounce it Eye-Ra as that's not how I've ever heard it said but perhaps it is regional and depends on the accent or area of Wales.

BertrandRussell · 02/08/2016 22:41

Era

cheapandcheerful · 02/08/2016 22:42

Eye-rah

ChiefClerkDrumknott · 02/08/2016 23:29

mamas12 has it. Ei as in hay, without the h, then ra, with a short a. Welsh speaker, south east Wales

Clebaby · 02/08/2016 23:30

We would pronounce it eye-ra even if not everyone in Wales agrees! My nan is Welsh and told me this is correct (she is from South) and we don't know many northern Welsh people.
Surprised at confusion over iyra.. I think Ira really is best spelling! Maybe IRA will stop terrorizing people :(

cathyandclaire · 02/08/2016 23:36

I had an Aunty Eira, pronounced Eye-ra she was Welsh speaking and from West Wales. People from North Wales called her Ay-ra, so I think it's regional and you can say what you like.
Pretty name.
