As the title says...how would you spell this name please?
I know someone with it but don't like the spelling they use so an looking for an alternative...

The name, phonetically, is:

Eirlys, Welsh for snowdrop

HoratioNightboy · 26/07/2016 17:56

I think if I saw the name Ilys I'd ask how they pronounced it without even attempting it myself!

Both the 'I' and the 'y' have three possible sounds they can make: 'i' (like in bit, 'eye', and 'ee'. And as I've never seen the name before there would be no familiarity to guide me.

Honestly it could sound like anything. Maybe you should just spell it 'Eyeless'...

I think I would try to avoid starting with capital i then lower case L because these letters look identical in most fonts. Also it would be constantly mispronounced ill-iss

I would also try to avoid starting with Ayl as this would be mispronounced as Alice or Ale-iss

I think

Eyliss or Eillis would make it most likely to be pronounced correctly.

Eirlys - Welsh. I love this name.

Sophronia · 26/07/2016 18:15

Eilis

Captainkanga · 26/07/2016 18:28

It's Eirlys

Dairybanrion · 26/07/2016 18:31

If it's Irish name it's pronounced
Eye leash

Eibhlis, eilis,

Then there's Ay-leash.

juneau · 26/07/2016 18:32

Eirlys

ImperialBlether · 26/07/2016 18:33

Golden rule: if you don't know how to pronounce it, it's unlikely a lot of other people will know.

Another golden rule: don't just add a letter on 'because it looks nicer'!

SellFridges · 26/07/2016 18:37

I havent read the thread but it's Eirlys I think. Welsh for snowdrop.

MsKite · 26/07/2016 20:09

Eirlys I think. It's Welsh. I knew a lovely lady with that name Smile

MsKite · 26/07/2016 20:10

I've always liked the name but she herself didn't and was known by another name.

doing · 26/07/2016 20:15

Also Llys is used in lots of road names in Wales,

I think it means cul de sac.

JemimaMuddledUp · 26/07/2016 20:19

Llys means court in Welsh.

I'd go with Eirlys

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 26/07/2016 20:19

I was going to say Eirlys, but I see PPs have beaten me to it. Pronounced more like Air- liss, though; no 'll', so no 'hl' sounds...

finova · 26/07/2016 21:46

Ailys

(I scrolled without looking!)

Dontrocktheboat · 29/07/2016 21:28

Eirlys, it's Welsh I think.
