Alexandra or Lyla? Please help us decide

We're expecting our third child any day and still can't decide on a girls name. We're between Alexandra (probably shortened to Alex) or Lyla. Any thoughts, will Lyla be a fad name, is Alex a pretty enough name? Please help!

Alexandra. Nn Alex
It's cool and strong and feminine.
.... I'm biased though!

Another vote for Alexandra. I like Alex or Alexa as a nickname. Another one with biase.

NerrSnerr · 18/06/2016 00:29

Bias

MouldyPeach · 18/06/2016 00:33

Lyla sounds too clunky, also a bit like liar. I have an Alex but I didn't choose it because it's a pretty name, I don't think it is! But it is a great name. Lexi is a pretty nn for Alex if that's the kind of thing you're looking for.

JazzAnnNonMouse · 18/06/2016 04:02

I like lyla. Never been keen on Alex for a girl.

HannahLJS · 18/06/2016 04:04

Lyla definitely - what a lovely name!
Congratulations btw!Flowers x

Don't like Lyla at all. Alexandra is fabulous!

CharminglyGawky · 18/06/2016 04:06

Alexandra is a beautiful name.

You could also shorten it to Lexie which you might like if your other choice is Lyla?

Sophronia · 18/06/2016 06:00

Alexandra! I prefer the Lila spelling to Lyla.

EllenDegenerate · 18/06/2016 11:38

Delilah nn Lilah?

julfin · 18/06/2016 12:27

Never heard of Lyla but I like it. Also like Alexandra - a good strong sophisticated name. I prefer the nn Lexi/Lexie to Alex personally.

Alexandra for two reasons

  1. Lots of potential nicknames, Alex, Alexa, Lexi, Lex etc
  2. When she is older she can put Alex on CVs and job applications and escape some of the unconscious gender bias.
chocoLit · 18/06/2016 22:05

We have an Alexandra. She's fab and unbelievably cool in such a cool way she doesn't even realise it

She goes by Lex. Her choice. I told you she rocks Grin

blueandgreendots · 18/06/2016 22:13

Another vote for Alexandra - mine is just under two months old and we shorten it to Alex, but as others have said there are loads of potential shortenings/nick names. I love that the name is long, strong and feminine but the shortened version is gender neutral.

DramaAlpaca · 18/06/2016 22:14

Alexandra

Thanks all, it seems that Alexandra is getting the vote ahead of Lyla!

NauticalIce · 19/06/2016 14:31

Lyla... I don't like Alexandra, sorry!

amarante · 19/06/2016 14:44

Mycraneisfixed · 19/06/2016 14:46

I have a Lyla, she's 11 now, named after the Oasis song that was released at the time she was born. Since then we have known of 4 others over the last few years, so rare but still fairly normal sounding.
She loves her name, I have no regrets, only annoyance is that is is frequently spelled incorrectly as Lila and she often gets called Lola or Layla.

NauticalIce · 19/06/2016 15:06

Actually, what are your thoughts on Leila/Layla? I love it Smile

Oly5 · 19/06/2016 15:10

I have an Alexa. Classy and beautiful, as is Alexandra!
