As a name for a boy, nn Wolfie.....

Other DC have slightly unusual names.

Is it too weird?

I'm sorry but it reminds me of Hitler. I'm pretty certain he used to call himself Herr wolf.

FrikkaDilla · 13/06/2016 07:40

Hyena has a better ring to it.

Lweji · 13/06/2016 07:43

Jackal
Willie (middle name Coyote) not so much.

spooforbrains · 13/06/2016 13:28

A friend has just pinged this thread over to me, thought I might want to contribute as a card carrying Wolf.

I love it. It's memorable, and I have never been mocked as an adult for it (and really wasn't much as a child either. Mocked for lots of other things but very rarely ever my name).

Gladiators is out of the public consciousness now, so when I used to occasionally get asked "like the gladiator" I don't any more. I still use it myself over the phone from time to time just for the LOLs. "Wolf. Like the gladiator". It usually gets a puzzled response these days.

I also went to school with a Woolf. Very nice chap, he was, and unlike me (I am and always have been a massive nerd, and so was never hugely popular at school) he was one of the popular kids.

So, in summary, I'm in favour. Great name.

DiscordiaVanDiemen · 13/06/2016 13:31

Am I the only fan of the (brilliant) shows Outrageous Fortune and Westside? (Wolfgang West)
And actually when I was very young (maybe 6 or 7) Wolfgang was my absolute favourite boy name..

Natsku · 13/06/2016 13:36

Wolfgang rather than just Wolf. I think some animal names in some languages work but not English so much (like a friend named her boy Otso, which is one of the names for bear in Finnish)

EssentialHummus · 13/06/2016 13:37

I'd find it a bit weird, but came on to say that it is a popular if slightly old-fashioned name in Hebrew ("Ze'ev"), so possibly hunt for Wolfy names in other languages if you're keen on exploring related options?

LuckySantangelo1 · 13/06/2016 13:39

I like it. I also know one. Lots of hippy-ish/nature/trendy names where I live.

Emyloohoo · 13/06/2016 16:15

My friend wanted to name her son Grizzly. People gave her the sideeye for it, but I think... when other people are naming their children "Roman" and "Sepia" ... you do you, lady. If he hates, it he can always choose a NN he likes.

Pinklily1 · 13/06/2016 21:19

It makes me think of Wolf the Gladiator!

JemimaHighway · 13/06/2016 21:29

ladymumble
Maybe get a few others on your shortlist in case you change your mind.

ladymumble you're so lovely. Everyone else is saying "no, just....no". You're saying "no" in such a kind, gentle way. Wish I had more people like you in my life

WhiskyTangoFoxtrot · 13/06/2016 21:32

Roman is a perfectly normal Russian/Eastern European name Confused

SpecialStains · 14/06/2016 16:38

I worked with a Wolf. He was the most arrogant human being I have ever met. It's a silly name.

ShortcutButtons · 15/06/2016 09:44

Love it. I actually know three boys under 8 called Wolfie (Wolfric), Bear and Badger (Badge). They are not related.

Voteforpedr0 · 15/06/2016 09:46

Why name a human after an animal ?

Voteforpedr0 · 15/06/2016 09:47

Shortcut - do you socialise in and around animal sanctuaries ?

BathshebaDarkstone · 15/06/2016 09:53

DS2 was going to be called Wulf, but it doesn't work with his surname.

I may be the only one who likes it! Blush

Lweji · 15/06/2016 12:44

Why name a human after an animal ?

Yes. Unlike Robin, Leo, Jay, or nicknames Cat or Kitty.

Voteforpedr0 · 15/06/2016 14:30

Lweji - Leo ??? Nicknames are different

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 15/06/2016 14:36

It might not suit him. He might be a small delicate fair haired boy who hates getting dirty and loves sheep.

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 15/06/2016 14:46

.. I'm thinking of Hugh Jackman as Wolverine Grin all black chest hair, mutton chops and claws. Grin

Evelyn2405 · 17/06/2016 21:06

I've always thought Wolf was an awesome name, I was going to use Wilf (Wilfred) but I had a girl!

pinkyredrose · 17/06/2016 21:11

Fab name!

MrsEricBana · 17/06/2016 21:16

I love Wolf. My grandfather's neighbour was called Wolf and "Wolfie" is what Mozart's wife called him in Amadeus (ah, Tom Hulce back in the day, sigh).
Also like Brock, derived from the Welsh for badger apparently.
Weasel not so great.

margewiththebluehair · 21/06/2016 13:59

I would do Wolfgang or Wolfric and then shorten it.

Wolf sounds like a redneck in Louisiana...
