Does a girls name exist that isn't overly popular, sound similar to something overly popular, about to become overly popular or just plain boring or dated?

Really don't want to go for the so called 'classic names', as it just seems so boring (I know for lots of people they're not boring, I just think they're dull), personally can't stand the Eva, Ava, Sophie, Lily names. Quite like harder sounding names like Edith, Enid, Maud, Agnes, but these may well be the next type of name to become fashionable. Completely get that people like the types of names I have mentioned, but can I avoid the above scenarios in any way. Friends who have recently had babies have gone for things like Cecily, Otto, Margot, Beatrice etc, but I know at least 2 under 6 months of each of these so I imagine they may become super popular as well. I know it shouldn't matter but it does! Hit me with ideas please...

Some great names. Love Aphra, Constance, Esther, Maria. Could I add Lorna? Like Ingrid too.

My daughters name is Anamaya, she is 5 years old and still never met one or seen it on the girls list.

This site is your friend.

Try and find something that doesn't have any massive ups or downs.

Bear in mind that the name you choose might suddenly become super popular anyway. No way to completely prevent that!

septembersunshine · 06/05/2016 14:34

Ivy? Iris? Heather? Hazel? But honestly I'd just chose a name you love more then a name you think will be popular/date. It's good that you know what you do and don't like so that's the most important thing. I don't think you can predict future trends and it's also a regional thing.

I know an Inga (am abroad), which I think is nice. And 'harder' without being (to my mind) ugly.

I quite like some American girls names that aren't popular here:

Cadence
Cassidy
Brianna
Macey
Aubrey
Paisley
Nova
Liana

Frances
Meriel
Joy
Maren (pronounced with a long 'a' - means 'of the sea' or thereabouts)
Thalia (muse of comedy :) Would have loved it for my dd but we live in a country where pronunication would have been an issue)
Jane/Jean

Youranus · 06/05/2016 18:38

Muriel. Love it, but can't see it ever becoming common or over popular.

Matilda, marina, tabitha, anastasia, Florence, Emily, Juliet, Jemima, Eilidh, Harriet

Feel quite smug to see both my dds names on more than one list. Others we considered:

Edith
Esther
Avery
Lois
Clare
Sylvia
Cecilia
Bryn
Robin (in the U.S. Robyn is a hussy name and Robin is unisex)

But bear in mind that 20 years ago I called my dd a lovely, classic but incredibly unusual name that raised quite a few eyebrows - Grace! And 35 years previously my mother had been talked out of using her favourite name for me because it was so boring and old fashioned and downright odd - Emily.

So there are no guarantees.........

mushroomsontoast · 07/05/2016 13:25

If I had to name another DD I would go for a 1970s style name

Sarah
Catherine
Rachel
Claire
Deborah
Victoria
Elizabeth

Etc etc. Might seem 'common' to our generation, but you never see babies with these names and they are lovely!
