I don't know if we are brave enough to use this name!

We went on a trip to Australia; there's a really beautiful bird - we feel in love with the name of it, so it's basically a nature name!

There was only 5 girls given the name in 2014, in the UK...

The name is Rosella...

I'm just not sure we are brave enough to use it though! I love that she could be called Rose/Rosie/Ella/Elle/Ellie, etc.

I'd call her by Rosella though, maybe Rose for short.

We have not told family yet, but I know my mum will hate it.

What do you think? If not, she'll probably be Darcy.

I have an Italian friend called Rossella. It's a well known name over there. It's beautiful!

I think it's a lovely name too. And I'm afraid I'm with everyone else in the not liking Darcy camp (are you from the U.S. though as maybe it will be popular there plus you liking it is what matters !)

MadameJosephine · 25/04/2016 21:28

Beautiful name, I've never heard it before but I love it. It's unusual but not 'out there'.

I really don't like Darcy either

lazysummer · 25/04/2016 22:13

Lovely name- beautiful as it is but also versatile.
I have a Rose; she was Rosie when she was little, but she ditched that at about the age of 17.

You're probably getting bored hearing the same thing over and over, but this is a beautiful name. Brilliant to have found a name that's so unusual and yet so normal/natural-sounding!

Don't tell your folks until the baby's been born.

Or you could just tell them "We've chosen a name and we're not telling you what it is, but it was inspired by Australia" and then they'll imagine the worst.

MerryMarigold · 25/04/2016 23:23

There's a barbie film with a 'Rosella' in it (island princess)

She's 'Ro' for short which I think it's ab lovely name

Astrophe · 26/04/2016 13:10

Rosellas and galahs are quite different, so don't worry about that (but yes, galah is an insult...a bit like buffoon or drongo).

I know a baby Rosella (in Australia). Tbh I find it a bit strange, I guess like naming a British child...squirrel? Badger? Or something like that. But it's not an ugly word, sounds like a name, and you dont live in Australia, so I think you can get away with it. She may get funny looks on her Aussie gap year though ;-)

WhiteHairReally · 26/04/2016 15:04

Someone upthread babysat for a Rosella. A Rosella babysat for my two children in the early 2000s and she was a lovely lovely girl. ( She also had the number plate RO53LLA on her little car, which I have to admit to thinking was pretty cool.) I'm sure she is now a lovely lovely adult, maybe a MNetter herself, reading this thread and recognising herself.

Wenchelda · 26/04/2016 16:26

It's a lovely name. I'm actually going to steal it and put it in on the list for my next (hypothetical & probably never to be had) dd. Love that there's a choice of several shortenings too. It's beautiful Smile

WhoaCadburys · 27/04/2016 01:12

It's beautiful. Get this thread deleted though or everyone will steal it from you!

Blahia · 27/04/2016 19:40

I think it's great! Not something I would call my own child, but something I would think was nice if I heard it in the park, if that makes sense.

(I must admit it also reminded me of roseola, but since you're not actually calling your baby roseola I think it's fine! Ha!)

Threefaries · 29/04/2016 16:52

Go for it, it's lovely.

KP86 · 29/04/2016 17:15

I think it's a lovely name.

The only thing I should let you know is that it's also a brand of tomato sauce (ketchup) in Australia.

Turbinaria · 01/05/2016 22:09

Rosella is fine thought you were going to use kookooburra Grin

Lucked · 01/05/2016 22:22

Lovely name. I would pronounce it Roh-zella until told otherwise but l think any pronunciation is fine.

butteredmuffin · 01/05/2016 22:25

I like Rosella. It's unusual without being weird!

handonhip · 02/05/2016 18:12

It's really lovely! Go for that one, definitely. Probably best to say nothing yet, as then nothing can diminish your pleasure. It's such a nice choice.

Biscuitsneeded · 02/05/2016 21:14

I know a very nice Italian woman called Rossella.

Definitely prefer Rosella to Darcy.

I also think you should put family off the scent by saying her name is secret but inspired by your Australia trip. They'll be imagining all kinds of odd things (Wollongong, anyone?) and will be delighted to hear her name once she's born.
