I don't know if we are brave enough to use this name!

We went on a trip to Australia; there's a really beautiful bird - we feel in love with the name of it, so it's basically a nature name!

There was only 5 girls given the name in 2014, in the UK...

The name is Rosella...

I'm just not sure we are brave enough to use it though! I love that she could be called Rose/Rosie/Ella/Elle/Ellie, etc.

I'd call her by Rosella though, maybe Rose for short.

We have not told family yet, but I know my mum will hate it.

What do you think? If not, she'll probably be Darcy.

It's not pronounced Rose Ella though. It's Rozella.

Peach1886 · 25/04/2016 09:09

Rosella is gorgeous, unusual but not out there, and when she's a teenager she can be Roz which will be very cool Grin

PrincessJoJo123 · 25/04/2016 12:29

Darcy isn't out there! I think it's in the top 20 Smile

Well, we all pronounced it Rose-Ella and even the person showing us the birds did Confused oh well, even if it isn't - if say it like that

Love it. It's positively Shakesperean, not out there at all.

Pigeonpost · 25/04/2016 12:30

Pretty name! Go for it. Don't tell anyone...

Thumbcat · 25/04/2016 12:32

It's lovely. Not at all wacky and infinitely preferable to Darcy.

WhyCantIuseTheNameIWant · 25/04/2016 12:44

Hmm.
Roz. Rose. Elle. Ella. Rosie.

Or d. Arse.

I knew a Darcey who called herself bum. As it was nicer than Arse. Honestly.

Rosella is cute.

FastWindow · 25/04/2016 12:52

I love Rosella. So elegant.

Tip - if you can't be doing with any comments from people family with no business poking holes in your chosen name - tell them Darcy. Until the day you register her birth. Mwahaha. Worked brilliantly for me second time round, having learnt my lesson from the first baby.

Favourite well meaning comment on our chosen boy name? 'well, he'll never be a CEO with a name like that.'

Fottfsof.

crabb · 25/04/2016 13:04

Def pronounced Rose-Ella in Aus. And also leads to thoughts of sauce, soups and relishes for Australians! The birds were first identified by settlers at Rose Hill (near Parramatta), and it's thought the name comes from Rose-Hiller.

chillycurtains · 25/04/2016 13:09

What a beautiful name. I would definitely ignore any objections and call her that. It's a wonderful unique name and Darcey is over used and a bit boring.

SeekEveryEveryKnownHidingPlace · 25/04/2016 13:10

Dd has a friend with that name who's usually known as Lel or Lella.

VestalVirgin · 25/04/2016 13:24

I thought it would be something awful when I read the thread title ... like that mother who wanted to name her daughter Cyanide.

Rosella sounds like a normal name, I wouldn't have thought it is so rare. I also like Darcy because I am a fan of Pride and Prejudice, but I don't think your child will hate you for Rosella ... well, of course you never know, some girls called Isabella probably hate their parents right now, but the risk is not that high.

JustABigBearAlan · 25/04/2016 13:27

It's really pretty. I normally like traditional names but Rosella is lovely. Plus I think because it sounds like Rose and Ella which are traditional names, it's not too out there!

GerundTheBehemoth · 25/04/2016 13:35

Rosellas and galahs are different, so that needn't be a concern. The galah is the roseate cockatoo. Rosellas are (several different species of) colourful parakeets - the <a class="break-all" href="https://images.duckduckgo.com/iur/?f=1&image_host=http%3A%2F%2Fupload.wikimedia.org%2Fwikipedia%2Fcommons%2F3%2F33%2FPlatycercus_eximius_diemenensis_male.jpg&u=upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/3/33/Platycercus_eximius_diemenensis_male.jpg" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">eastern rosella is probably the best known one. It's a nice name (Rosella, I mean. Galah, not so much!)

Cocoabutton · 25/04/2016 13:46

Okay, I got it mixed up with roseola, which DD had when she was little but that is just me.

Gummibaers · 25/04/2016 14:45

Rosella is beautiful and not overused! Lovely name.

(Just don't shorten to Ella, that is a little overused imo)

nectarini1983 · 25/04/2016 14:59

Go for it! It's really pretty.

septembersunshine · 25/04/2016 16:09

I really like it and there is nothing to be ashamed of here - it's really pretty and like you say, lots of nicknames to pick from should you want to shorten the name. Also it's lovely you have a story behind the name : )

crje · 25/04/2016 16:15

I like it a lot
It's very pretty

louise2011 · 25/04/2016 16:48

Rosella was a popular old lady name in Ireland. Love it & haven't heard of any under the age of 40! Go for it

SpaceDinosaur · 25/04/2016 16:53

Beautiful!!!

I too came on here expecting a "claymidea" type name!

Rosella is beautiful. So much so that I think it just made the list (due Dec!)

3luckystars · 25/04/2016 16:55

I was expecting something like Bunyip!

Rosella is lovely!! Really lovely! Go for it.

TyrionLannistersShadow · 25/04/2016 17:04

Lovely name! I actually heard it on the radio this morning and thought what a gorgeous name , very unusual.

AlwaysNC · 25/04/2016 17:14

Go for it
