Oscar - too common?

I was wondering how common the name Oscar really is. As I understand it's in the top 10 boys names, but I've never heard a child called Oscar.

DH and I really like it for DC2 (Brother to Henry) if bump is a boy but I wanted to stay away from the top 10.

A friend of mine also said it's a bit 'chav'. Again this could be location based. We're in London.

I'm in London, too (SW) and we know many, many Oscars. There seems to be at least one in every class at DS's school, and lots of baby Oscars in the area, too. Its popularity doesn't seem to be waning any time soon!

I'm in the South West and it's very popular here. It's a nice name but I think it will date.

We're in East London and there are a lot of Alfie, Harry, Ronnie and Bobby's but I'm yet to meet an Oscar.

Doesn't take away from the fact it does seem to be so popular.

Annoying as it's the only name we agree on. Apart from Austin, but DH is set on Oscar.

I know of a couple in the North West. I think it's a lovely name, all seem very nice boys

I'm in north London and have come across quite a few Oscar's. When I was pregnant with DD 5 years ago this was my first choice if she was a boy but I didn't even consider it for DS last year. It's a fab name but I think it will be dated in about 10 years time. My DD has a top 10 name but it's more classic and won't date in the same way IMO. My worry with Oscar was that it's not a name that has been used much for a long time and suddenly there's a whole load of Oscar's so in the future it will be of a particular era if that makes sense. In the end we decided on a pretty uncommon but not necessarily unusual name for DS.

I have a nephew called Oscar and there's one in DDs reception class too. Seems to be getting more and more popular.

It's taking over from Oliver in the SW.

I'm in the north west and when DS was born 2.5 years ago 4 out of the 7 boys born in the same month were called Oscar / Oskar.

There are loads round us. 2 in ds's class. Like the name but wouldn't choose it now as I try to stay away from overly popular names. Don't think it's an issue though if you like it. I was the only kid with my name and always wanted it to be more common as a kid...

I'm in Kent and although it's supposedly popular I don't know any and my children don't have any in their classes at school. Definitely not chavy imo. Much better than Austin ( yuck!) X

My DS was in a swimming class with 4 oscars last year. 2 of the mothers said they had picked Oscar over Oliver as they did not want a popular name 😕. My son was very much the rare name in that class (he is Oliver) 😂. Very popular here in the south I know lots and lots of them.

It's a nice name but I discounted it for DS born this year on the basis that I know far too many Oscars. I don't mind a popular name, in fact DD has a top 10 name, but I couldn't personally name any others with her name but could reel off about 10 Oscars. We are in the SE.

I've a 23 year old Oscar. It seems very popular.

Popular hear where we live - Cheshire and where I work - Manchester.

My youngest ds is Oscar

I'm fairly certain Henry will be top 10 next year. Every baby boy born now is Henry. Don't know many oscars.

We live in Sweden. The crown-princess had a baby Oscar 4 weeks ago. It will become super-popular now

I don't think it's super popular yet but certainly on the up. When my cousin had and Oscar about 7 years ago it felt very unusual. Hence I would worry about it being a bit faddy.
