Kit as a full name?

DH is called Christopher but always gets called Chris (he dislikes Christopher)
Can we use Kit as a name to honour DH but use the name Kit as a full name?

Other children have nick names as their full names

It's a MN favourite but I didn't know it was short for Christopher till I read these threads.
I don't like it personally it will always mean the car in nightrider to me - sorry.

My DF is Christopher/Chris. We called our DS'S after their grandfather's so DS2 is Christopher nn Kit. Would definitely have the full name to fall back on. When we named DS2, Kit was unusual and our point of reference was Kit Marlowe. Now it's a lot more popular, partly thanks to celebs including the Rooney, but they tend to use Kit as a stand alone name.

Ought to add that if you have Kit as a nn, he might end up as Chris anyway, as some people tend to use a well-known nn even if it's not the one the family use. DF was known as Topher at home (DGM was v grand!) but no one ever calls him that now.

I've always though that Kit was a great name.

I personally prefer full names on BC but there's no reason why you should have to if you don't want to.

I'm seriously considering Kit as a full first name if this baby (DC2) turns out to be a boy - it's one of the few boy's names DH and I both like!

I didn't watch nightrider so I don't have that association to make with the name, and didn't realise Kit was Rooney's sons name either - Where have I been!!

I haven't used full names for my other children ( not that I am carrying on a theme) but like you MyBreadisEggy Kit is one of the names we like and as it's a short form of Christopher it has a bit more meaning.
Fozzleyplum - My Dh was known as Topher by his younger sibling as he couldn't say Christopher.

There are lots of nicknames that are now used as full names, so I don't think that's a problem.

My DH is also a Christopher and we love the name Kit but DH doesn't want child to be called Christopher. Been put off a little by the Rooney's but if that doesn't bother you then go for it!

I think Kit is fine as a full name. Apparently Kit Harrington of GoT fame only found out his actual name was Christopher when he was a teenager! No idea how that fact had managed to pass him by. I suspect he's not as observant as is he is pretty.

I have a Kit but his full name is Cheistpoher as I like to give a child options. If Kit becomes associated with someone undesirable, or he just doesn't like it, then he can always change to Christopher, Chris or Topher.

In the same vain we have a Tilda but she's really Matilda and growing up she could be Matilda, Tilly, Milly or Matty.

I really like to give a child options for their future. Kit on its own is a constraining name, Christopher nn Kit gives your child and future adult lots of choice.

inreallynlike irvand have a son with a nickname as full name - thibk it's perfectly acceptable these days. I love short, snappy 1 syllable names for boys (I have 3, hnadybfor shouting at them all at the same time :))

Thank you for the replies - think as my other children don't have full names Kit fits in the same catergory without the same 'ee' ending that they have.

Undercooked - I agree with what you are saying about having a full name to fall back on, however we both don't like Christopher just Kit - and would always call him Kit and not Chris. Love Topher though :)

albertcampionscat - DH not keen on Kester - I don't think it's too bad though.

I like it. It might start becoming a bit popular because of Kit Harrington (Jon Snow GoT) but that's not a bad thing. Prefer Kit to Christopher.

It's a fab name, children don't need a choice of names. My name is supposedly a nickname and it has never crossed my mind to be bothered by it

I've got a Kit. He's 15. I would have had this on his BC but DH thought he should have a fuller name 'in case he ever became a law lord or prime minister!' We went for Christopher although it is also a short form of Christian.
We never use Christopher as a name. I expect most of his friends would have no idea. Only used on his passport and registering for school etc.
When in Year 1 one of their targets was to be able to write their name. He was furious when he found out he was in fact called Christopher (11 letters!) and not just Kit!
I still love the name and hope he identifies more with Kit Marlowe than Kit Rooney!
