Dorothea and Rosemary both have lovely nicknames, Dottie and Rosie. I think I prefer Rosemary at a push although I would prefer Dorothy most of all!

Ruby used to be very popular so the shine has come off this name a little....

BendydickCuminsnatch · 29/03/2016 22:01

Dorothea - love the nn Dot!

Hassled · 29/03/2016 22:02

Rosemary. I love that name and it's very rarely used - I know no young Rosemarys.

DramaAlpaca · 29/03/2016 22:04

Rosemary with the nickname Romy or Rosie.

Sophronia · 29/03/2016 22:50

Dorothea or Rosemary.

Bellyrub1980 · 29/03/2016 22:56

I met a (very upper class) Rosalie the other day. Just thought I'd mention it as an alternative.

Ruby has family meaning for me so if automatically be drawn to that. But I like Rosie better than Dottie (or Dorrie, as I've known one be called) so probably Rosemary purely on that basis.

But Dorothy is nice too.

Sorry, not much help.

I'd put Beatrix/Beatrice, Violet and Florence in the same category.

Thank you for your comments! How many Ruby's do people know, is it becoming more popular?

i know 3 baby rubys all under 3 - it was originally a name on my list but its now been removed because of that

Bellyrub1980 · 30/03/2016 21:10

I know one 5 year old called Ruby, that's it.

GoldPlatedBacon · 30/03/2016 21:57

I know 3 Ruby's under 5 but I prefer it out of your choices. I know one Dorothy (Dottie) who is 2 and a baby Rosemary (Rose)

FatFrillyFilly · 31/03/2016 01:23

I know absolutely no babies or children or adults or pets with the name RubyWink

Can't abide the name Dorothea & not keen at all on Rosemary as I went to school with two horrid Rosemarys. Sorry OP

I like Dorothea (non for me would be Thea) the best, followed by Rosemary I know no children called either of those. However the year my DD was born (she is now 9) every other child seemed to be called Ruby.
