Using a name from a popular TV series... bad idea?

I have a DS, he's 3.5 year and called Arthur. It was the only name we liked and the only name on our boys list.

I'm currently 32 weeks pregnant and we knew Arthur was going to be Arthur from about week 15. This baby still has no name :(

The problem is I really like the Name Tyrion, (pron. Tireeun) being Welsh it sounds like a "real" name to me and apparently does have celtic origin. But it's also a popular character from a book.

I also really like Henry, but our surname begins with a H so sounds a bit odd?!

We like James as a middle name with both names, but actually can we use James as a first name too. Is it a little bland? But then Henry isn't exactly novel is it?

ARGH - it's too hard. Everyone keeps saying "wait until he comes you will know" but I wont know and I wont have time to post on mumsnet then either :(

I've read the books and watch the show - I don't really mind about the character traits, I'd be using the name because I really like name, not after the character as such; if that makes any sense?

I have an uncle called Teifion (tay-vee-on) so it would be a bit of a nod to him too and a bit less Welsh looking (we live in England s people would struggle!).

Don't know about Tyrion (don't watch G of T) but I love the name Arthur.

George - I'm welsh, I'm due on St George's day and there's that little prince now, but I do love the name
Frederick/Freddie - love it too, both on list along with frank. However a lot of sibling sets seem to be called Arthur and Frank/Fred
Edwin/Edward Don't like nn Eddie
Stanley - love it, on list as frm favourite, close friends DS has it as a middle name though
Sidney - to me it's more of a girl name, I know it isn't though
yy Henry - yay, even with H surname?
Wilfred - on list Husband hates it, he also hated Arthur so I more or less ignore him unless he says he still hates it when he's here!

There are all good strong names. I know Tyrion isn't a made up name but it sounds like one IYSWIM - it sounds nice but it sounds like a Tyrone type name. I still like it though.

You really shouldn't worry about how the middle name flows, Apart from new babies people's middle names are never mentioned.

I like loads of other welsh ones but my husband had poo pood'd a lot of them or said something about them that made me then less keen!

eg - Alwyn "sounds like a fairy"... Brychan "isn't that like brambles?"... and Gwilym "like the little alien troll thing from Lord of the rings?"!

There's a lovely little Welsh child's hymn, iesu tirion. Tirion is a Welsh word for kind/gentle, not used in day to day conversation but would be a nice name. Tyrion, in Welsh, would be pronounced tuh-riyn, if you want the GoT character's name as a Welsh name it should be spelt tirion.

Basic translation of the prayer - gentle Jesus see me now, a small child kneeling down. At my blessing see mercy, kind jesus don't refuse me.
Is basically the Welsh equivalent of 'as I lay me down to sleep'. If I met a tirion/Tyrion I would think of the prayer. It is a nice prayer with no bad connotations so I would think it a lovely name but it would be my first thought

I know two little Arthurs. One has a baby brother called Henry & the other has a twin brother called George.

I love Gwilym! Arthur and Gwilym are great together.

I also love Parry but your might get nicknames like Arr and Par.

Tirion is Welsh for gentle- not so much spoken but cottages will be named ty Tirion, and streets Bryn Tirion etc. You could use that ( correct pronunciation is bit different but sod it if your in England anyway!)

Tyrion to me is only Game of Thrones, I've never heard it in any other context. I'm a fan of both the series and the original books and I'd never call a child one of the characters. A dog or cat maybe, but not a person.

Apart from anything else most GoT characters either do terrible things (Tyrion kills his father) or have terrible things happen to them. Or both. The series isn't ended yet so who knows what might happen next.

Id definetly go for Stanley over Tyrion. Im tempted to say that after a "classic" name like Arthur, the hormones and the fact you feel like you are running out of time is making you go for a wacky choice

Tyrion is a fab name & I'm all for using book/TV characters as names but it's GoT & hasn't ended yet and that would worry me! Though as it's also a word anyway... It is a lovely name!

How about Taliesin, you already have an Arthur or maybe Owain?
