Adeline

What is the most common way to pronounce Adeline? I like it with a -line sound, like Caroline, rather than with a -leen sound, like Josephine or Emmeline, but I was wondering what's the most authentic and/or common way to say it in the UK. I appreciate that ad-eh-LEEN is the French/original pronunciation.

We really like Caroline but it derives from the same name as mine and I think that's bit naff?

Any ideas how Virginia Woolf said it? It was her first name.

Thanks!

I'd say it how you want it said, rhyming with Caroline.

tsipka · 07/02/2016 20:47

I've only heard it as you like it in the UK, too. It's pretty, isn't it?

frenchfancy · 07/02/2016 20:52

As the mother of an Adeline, it is pronounced like Josephine. I have never heard is pronounced otherwise.

Good name though!

Iwonderif · 07/02/2016 20:54

I like it both but I personally thought it was pronounced as in Caroline. It's a beautiful name. Good choice.

Penfold007 · 07/02/2016 20:56

Adeline is pronounced just like Madeline but with out the M.

DramaAlpaca · 07/02/2016 21:09

I'd say it to rhyme with Caroline.

Fridayschild5 · 07/02/2016 21:14

I work with an Adeline and people pronounce it Adelin.

BendydickCuminsnatch · 07/02/2016 21:18

I'd say Madeline without the M too.

mydogeatsnutstoo · 07/02/2016 21:19

I would pronounce Adeleen. I thought that was only pronunciation - although have only everr heard it said on an audio book I listened to once, can't remember title.

reallybadidea · 07/02/2016 21:22

The Adeline I know pronounces it Ad-a-line like Caroline

EsmesBees · 07/02/2016 21:28

Beautiful name. I'd pronounce it A-da-line like the song from Guys and Dolls.

swancourt · 07/02/2016 21:32

I know an Adeline whose mum changed the spelling to 'Adelene' because everybody was pronouncing it the Caroline way. So I think you're safe with that spelling.

AprilShowers16 · 08/02/2016 00:58

Ooo I love this name, have been toying with Caroline in my head but Adeline is lovely too :) now to broach DH with both

Mclaren37 · 08/02/2016 11:30

Yup to rhyme with Caroline. That's the way it is pronounced in the film Age of Adeline too, lovely film!

HumbleCrumble · 08/02/2016 11:38

Spelt that way, I would probably say it like Caroline.

I love the sound of Adelyn (to rhyme with Lynne), but the Adeline spelling looks so much prettier, so I could never use it because I would either dislike the spelling or the pronunciation.

enderwoman · 08/02/2016 11:42

There was a movie where Blake Lively played the character Adeline and the voice over rhymed it with line not leen.

BuffaloCustardbath · 08/02/2016 12:27

I would also say it rhyming with Caroline too. Lovely name.

Raines100 · 08/02/2016 12:30

Love this name. Would rhyme it with Madeleine.

Gummibears · 08/02/2016 15:22

I'd probably pronounce Adeline Adeleen, but I'd definately pronounce Adelene that way.

Lbhughes85 · 19/03/2022 22:03

Hello, I am having this conundrum now - love the name Adeline but not sure on whether to say 'line' or 'leen' or 'lyn'! Also like the shortened version of 'Adie' as in ay-dee'.

What did you go for in the end?

JamieFrasersBigSwingingKilt · 19/03/2022 23:17

It was my grandmother's name. She was born just before WW1 and it was pronounced like Madeleine without the M. If that's helpful.

CakesOfVersailles · 20/03/2022 00:02

As a child the first time I encountered the name was the author Adeline Yen Mah and I always thought it was pronounced Ad-uh-lynn (basically how I pronounce Madeline but without an 'M').

Like how this news presenter says it in the first 10 seconds of the video:

But then I saw a trailer for Age of Adeline and they were saying "ad-ah-line" (with the line like Caroline).

I have never met an Adeline in real life!

LemonViolets · 20/03/2022 00:12

I work with an Ad-ah-lynn.
I also know an Ad-ah-line.
