Russell Harty being beaten up by Grace Jones is what comes immediately to mind. Or rustling, sweet papers or cattle. Grin

CJ1505 · 18/01/2016 13:52

What if it's to honour someone?

It's actually a really nice name. Nice, solid, traditional. I like it. Especially if it is to honour someone. Although best avoided if your surname is Sprout...

Sophronia · 18/01/2016 14:02

Makes me think of rustling.

bruffin · 18/01/2016 14:06

It was my grandad's name and wish i had included it in DS name.

SqueegyBeckinheim · 18/01/2016 14:09

I like it, I think it has a nice sound to it.

Aphie · 18/01/2016 14:10

It was my grandads name and I plan to use it as a first name if I have a son. Nice traditional name that doesn't sound old fashioned to me

ThatsNotMyRabbit · 18/01/2016 14:16

Russell Brand 😕

zippyswife · 18/01/2016 14:19

I'm considering it as a mn as was my mums maiden name. I like it. Ticks boxes to me is a solid well known name without being too common.

HollyBollyBooBoo · 18/01/2016 14:23

Love it but probably because I had a massive crush on a Russell in 6th form, he drove his dad's Land Rover and was, to me, the coolest man on the planet.

CJ1505 · 18/01/2016 14:28

It was my brother's name and would like it as a middle name for Matthew :)

OP posts:
iciclewinter · 18/01/2016 14:29

Personally I don't like it, but if you want to honour someone that's a good reason for using it if you do like it.

CJ1505 · 18/01/2016 14:32

I'm not keen and that's the thing...

OP posts:
iciclewinter · 18/01/2016 14:33

Did your brother have a middle name that you like?

CJ1505 · 18/01/2016 14:39

He had our dad's name (but in its short form)

OP posts:
Cavaradossi · 18/01/2016 14:44

OP, I'm sorry for your loss, but if you're not keen, there should be an end of it, for me. I'm really not in favour of naming children after the living or the dead for the sake of it. It would be a nice tribute to your brother's memory if you liked the name enough to use it, but you can't fence off a child's actual name with air quotes saying 'I don't actually like this, but it's to honour a relative's memory'. The child would just be Matthew Russell Jones, not Matthew 'Russell-in-memory-of-my-brother' Jones.

Having said that, it works rather nicely with Matthew as a middle name. Do you really hate it?

CJ1505 · 18/01/2016 14:47

I far from hate it, it's okay... (The funny thing is, our last name is Jones, lol) and I was thinking adding a second middle name...

Matthew Elliott Russell, or something like that?

OP posts:
zippyswife · 18/01/2016 14:50

Matthew russell Jones is lovely. Go for it.

KoalaDownUnder · 18/01/2016 14:50

Nah, ditch it if you're not keen

My mum made us promise not to name any daughters after her, as she hates both her first and middle names! Grin

CJ1505 · 18/01/2016 14:53

I think the difference is, I know he would like it

OP posts:
BackforGood · 18/01/2016 14:57

I was going to say I quite like it - nice, solid, reliable, 'proper' name.
The fact you are only using it for a middle name means there's nothing not to like for anyone, surely - it will only ever be heard on very rare occasion - like your wedding - it's not going to affect him much one way of the other.

KoalaDownUnder · 18/01/2016 14:59

Aw. Well, go for it then!

It does sound good with your other names. I don't mind it at all.

Cavaradossi · 18/01/2016 15:27

Oh, lord, did I get the wrong end of the stick, and your brother is in fact alive and well? Blush

That's a different matter, then. I would never give a child a name, even a middle one, because a family member would like it - if I didn't.

CJ1505 · 18/01/2016 15:28

No, no, he has passed away
