Class does make a difference. No good calling them any of those names if they go to a run down school on a sink estate. They would get the piss ripped out of them. One has to be realistc Grin

MistressMerryWeather · 04/01/2016 20:27

Oooh, great list, Them.

I absolutely love Rosalind, both the name and the character.

MistressMerryWeather · 04/01/2016 20:29

They may be your reality Flat but it's not mine. I know people from all sorts of classes and they are all capable of manners.

run down school on a sink estate

Nice.

SoWhite · 04/01/2016 20:30

I really, really like Antigone.

Sparklycat · 04/01/2016 20:33

Not Andromeda. The others are all ones I would consider.

Sparklycat · 04/01/2016 20:37

SoWhite I have always loved Antigone and Ismene, but husband won't have any of it due to the obvious pronunciation problems.

What is wrong with saying run down school on a sink estate?
They do exist you know, sadly.

SirChenjin · 04/01/2016 20:42

I totally get the class thing. In a Scottish comp of - ahem - mixed demographics, my kids would get the absolute pisses taken out of them if I sent them to school with name Andromeda and wold stick out like a sore thumble - and not in a good way Grin You're very naive if you believe that there aren't certain names which are more associated with certain classes.

Littleonesaid · 04/01/2016 20:42

Ophelia - makes me think of the tragic Millais painting. I wouldn't want that connotation for my child.

Persephone, ophelia,Titania or Andromeda
AlmaMartyr · 04/01/2016 20:43

Nice names. I know an Andromeda and an Ophelia and neither get teased at all, kids just accept it. Both love their names too.

Good to go for something different, I wish my parents had gone for the unusual name they thought of rather than the ultra boring one they chose. I understand other people have different experiences but I do get bored of the assumption that kids can only be miserable with an unusual name.

SirChenjin · 04/01/2016 20:43

Nother sure why autocorrect has pluralised piss there!

JasperDamerel · 04/01/2016 20:49

They're all nice, but I like Persephone and Andromeda best. Persephone is probably my favourite of the lot, and Percy is a really nice nickname for a girl.

MistressMerryWeather · 04/01/2016 20:51

It's not naivety, it's just different experiences and expectations.

DS1 goes to a primary school located in the middle of quite a few council estates and his Christmas card list had a huge variety of names.

Raging from the simple, but lovely Jim to the 'posh' Theodora.

MistressMerryWeather · 04/01/2016 20:52

Ranging, not raging.

Doh.

MistressMerryWeather · 04/01/2016 20:55

I'm in west Belfast, which is usually regarded as being rough as a badgers arse in most places.

Effiesmum · 04/01/2016 21:14

Have name changed as massively outing myself here.
I have an Ophelia. She is known by all as Effie. We wanted the nick name Effie but also a longer proper name so she could choose which to go by when she is older. DH didn't like Euphemia so we then worked backwards to find a name we like that Effie could be short for.
We have had no teasing about any names. I think there are so many unusual names that children don't tease these days. My mum is a primary school teacher and she hasn't come across name teasing. I have a slightly unusual name and never been teased (about my name!).

For my two penneth worth, I obviously love Ophelia and Persephone. Really dislike titiana, but again don't think would be teased.

Go with what you love. These threads are fabulous for insipriation, but don't take all the opinions too seriously. Some of my great friends don't like my daughters name and I don't like some of their children's names. Still love the people all just the same.

AmysTiara · 04/01/2016 21:24

Percy is not a nice nickname for a girl. It's bloody awful. Worse than calling her Persephone in fact Grin

MuttonCadet · 04/01/2016 21:35

Great names for moons Grin

Seriously I actually like all of them, probably Persephone most, andromeda least.

ClashCityRocker · 04/01/2016 21:35

Andromeda sounds a bit science fiction to me. I know it's a classical name, but it just puts me in mind of spaceships.

I like ophelia but depends on the last name.

And Persephone.

I have one of the most common names of my generation but still got teased for it. If someone wants to tease you, they'll find a reason.

Is the P silent in Ptolomy?

Would you mind explaining to me how discussing potential names is being a GF?

Ophelia is lovely

RiverTam · 04/01/2016 21:41

Reading this has made me feel more glad than ever that I live where I do. Yes, it's pretentious middle class London hipsterville but at least people don't get mocked for their names by the terminally dimwitted and narrow-minded at DD's school, be they Kai or Precious or Manon or Xanthe. We want to move out for various reasons but threads like this make me dread doing so (and that's with DD have a top 20 name). I'd be embarrassed and ashamed to admit that I lived somewhere where a Persephone would be 'ripped apart'. Though I appreciate not everyone has the choice. But some people are sounding like they think there's nothing wrong in this.

NeedsAsockamnesty · 04/01/2016 21:43

I'm pretty sure there is not much if anything normal about me. However not one of those names would be out of place in any enviroment I frequent and I am pretty sure not one of my children will ever need to concern themselves about what class people perceive them to be

There was a girl at my DDs nursery called Ophelia, nn Fifi - was a great nickname I thought!

Saxons · 04/01/2016 21:45
