But I'm sure they're still quite servicable sock. Grin

IfNotNowThenWhenever · 04/01/2016 00:59

Some of the best people on mn have Shakespearean names.

queenofthepirates · 04/01/2016 00:59

Orphelia but your kid better have a tough skin, there'll be a lot of teasing. Assuming you're not musing middle names and it's Christian names, why not go for something less conspicuous and a little more humane?

grumpysquash2 · 04/01/2016 00:59

I like Persephone the best, but the spelling/pronunciation thing is tricky.
Andromeda sounds like a space shuttle.
Titania would be abbreviated to Tit, which won't be good (I went to school with a Titus, and his mates all called him Tit for years)
Ophelia is pretty, but is too much like I-feel-ya (there is a joke that ends 'Ophelia bits', don't think it is funny but nevertheless....)

queenofthepirates · 04/01/2016 01:05

'Ophelia your bits'

That is quite funny!

Persephone would be shortened to Percy in our house.

NeedsAsockamnesty · 04/01/2016 01:05

queen

I have adult children and they have names along the same lines and have never had an issue with teasing

I love Persephone - both the full name and the nickname Sephy. Not keen on Percy, though!

I also like Andromeda, but then I have a soft spot for names along that theme. I'm fond of Cassiopeia, too.

Titania and Ophelia are nice in isolation but I wouldn't use either because of the potential for jokes and teasing, as others have already said.

TillyTolly · 04/01/2016 14:17

Persephone seems perfectly usable to me and Sephy is a pretty nickname, whilst Percy would suit a fun teenager too. I really like the sound of Ophelia but would probably avoid as the associations with the character are better known than with the others... Andromeda seems like a step too far, and Titania really does invite cruel teenage nicknames regardless of school context.

Daysleeper1985 · 04/01/2016 14:20

My word, they'd be torn to shreds in Yorkshire!! I now live in Scotland and unless they were schooled at Fettes or Gordonstoun then they'd be torn to shreds here too!!!

Boogers · 04/01/2016 14:30

Persephone would be shortened to Percy.

Andromeda would be shortened to Andi.

Titania would be shortened to Titty.

Ophelia would probably be shortened to Ophie, like Sophie but without the S.

It depends on your background and where you live. Those names would get the kid torn to pieces up here but somewhere more, shall we say, posher they would fit in well. Personally I prefer Ophelia, but then again that's because I felt sorry for Hamlet's Ophelia.

givepeasachance what's "wrong" with John and Emma is they are complete run of the mill, average, play it safe names we've heard 1000s of times before. They are not memorable or individual and I think far worse of parents (i.e. BORING!!) who choose names like these than ones daring to be slightly different.

timelytess · 04/01/2016 14:34

Not Ophelia. The rest are fine.

helensburgh · 04/01/2016 14:40

Hoping this is a wind up I really really do

BriocheBriocheBrioche · 04/01/2016 14:47

I love the name Ophelia.
I grew up with one, she was never teased at all and her name was normally shortened to Phe

RiverTam · 04/01/2016 14:52

Daysleeper well, that would make those people utter twats, wouldn't it? Ripping someone apart because of the name their parents chose for them? Nice Hmm. You sound almost proud of that.

Ophelia is nice, I like the pronunciation Off-ay-lia (as in the little girl in Pan's Labyrinth).

Cinnamon2013 · 04/01/2016 14:58

I have no probs with using Shakespearean names as such - but Ophelia... What depressing connotations, I can't see why anyone would give a newborn girl that name. Sadnessssss

Miranda?

Daysleeper1985 · 04/01/2016 14:58

I'm a teacher - no pride, just miserable (and as this thread shows, predictable) observational experience.

lloydlf76 · 04/01/2016 14:58

Persephone is gorgeous and the shortening Sephy or Effie are lovely

I like Ophelia too but wouldn't use it myself. Also know a little Seraphine which is a fab name too

DramaAlpaca · 04/01/2016 15:01

I wouldn't use any of them, but if I had to choose I'd go for Persephone, because I like the nn Sephy.

HPsauciness · 04/01/2016 15:05

Persephone is a lovely name, but most people would call her 'Percy Phone' so you are risking it a bit. I still think the name is nice and wouldn't mind a little Persephone if I was still having babies!

tuilamum · 04/01/2016 15:32

My favourite is Persephone
I like Andromeda with nn Andy
Ophelia isn't too bad
Titania I don't like and I immediately thought of the titanic Blush

redhat · 04/01/2016 15:38

I liked Persephone if we'd had a DD (which we didn't) but was put off by the fact that she'd forever have people thinking her name was pronounced "persa fone"

In all likelihood she'd be called Seph or Percy as an adult.

If you're too worried about the name how about Stephanie? It's very similar.

Andromeda sounds like a space shuttle.

Titania is just cruel. She'll have boob jokes fired at her constantly at senior school.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 04/01/2016 16:42

Along the same lines as Penelope and Persephone there's Mnemosyne, which I really like (and her story isn't bad, compared to lots of the Greek names) but don't think I could ever use it.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 04/01/2016 16:43

Also, she'd probably end up being forgetful... like the miserable Joy and clumsy Grace I know!
