Elijah

What are your thoughts on Elijah please? We're considering it after rejecting names we love like Jude, Luke and James because they don't flow very well with our one syllable surname.

I love Biblical names but am worried Elijah sounds a bit American Evangelical? On the other hand I love the way it sounds and it'spotential nicknames..

I love the name Elijah. It was going to be my boy's name but then my best friend used it without me ever telling her about it and it suits her ds so well!

MitzyLeFrouf · 13/12/2015 06:00

Far too religious for me.

AuntieStella · 13/12/2015 06:14

I would associate it with evangelical or charismatic Christianity (not necessarily US though).

I think it has a really positive ring to to. But if you want to time it down a bit, how about Elias?

Pinklily1 · 13/12/2015 16:31

I love it. It does make me think of the bible but I am not remotely religious and would still use it.

Elijah is a great name, weighty and historical. If you're not an American evangelical I don't think people would make that connection, after all the Bible is just as much used in the Church of England. Lots of Old Testament names are used by non-Christians these days (and it makes a change from Noah!)

BathshebaEvedene · 14/12/2015 02:44

Thanks for your thoughts. We are actually Christian so the fact it's biblical isn't a problem and one reason I like it, I just thought it might be a bit much.

Does anyone have an Elijah?

Grandson is an Elias, always called Eli. Love it.

metimeisforwimps · 14/12/2015 05:32

I think its a great name, so strong.

MadFestiveGnome · 14/12/2015 06:08

It's an awesome name, I love it. I'd probably go for Elias myself (have considered this Smile) just because it's a bit less out there but Elijah is brilliant.

Alisvolatpropiis · 14/12/2015 06:19

I've heard of a few Elijah's born recently (based in the uk). I suspect it will become the next Noah.

It's a nice name, also like Isaiah.

MrsCaecilius · 15/12/2015 13:21

It is very biblical to me, but if you come from a Christian background then that is't an issue!

HopefulAnxiety · 15/12/2015 18:41

Maybe some of the other disciples/early church figures in the Bible? Matthew, Andrew, Simon, Peter, Thomas, Nathaniel, Bartholomew, Matthias?

Also Jonah, Tobias (book of Tobit), Michael, Gabriel, Amos, Ezra, Eli, Josiah, Caleb, Joshua, Benjamin, Isaac, Jacob, David, Jonathan?

HopefulAnxiety · 15/12/2015 18:46

Oh and Stephen! You hardly see it now in small children but it's such a good classic name. Also Alexander and Rufus.
