Thoughts on Iris?
Has anyone used it and had any good or bad reactions?

MIL hates it (and isn't shy about telling me she hates it) but it's my number one at the moment.

Other choices are Rose, Lydia and Willow.

Love it. It was one of my names that got away!

shutupandshop · 28/11/2015 21:48

Love it and Rose too.

Wahhhh · 28/11/2015 21:54

I love it. Dd was very nearly Iris.

WanderingTrolley1 · 28/11/2015 21:58

Beautiful.

StrawberryLeaf · 28/11/2015 21:58

Beautiful Smile

Littleonesaid · 28/11/2015 22:01

There's an Iris in my DS' class and I love the name.

Sophronia · 28/11/2015 22:32

Love it. Rose is nice too.

CakeRattleandRoll · 29/11/2015 15:40

Beautiful name. My favourite of your four choices.

KittyandTeal · 29/11/2015 15:41

Our dd2 was Rose. If she'd been born alive she'd be Rose Iris.

Love the names together

Iggi999 · 29/11/2015 15:42

Do not discuss name ideas with mil?

ThursdayLastWeek · 29/11/2015 15:43

Love it.

Don't discuss names with anyone in RL apart from the father.

SoWhite · 29/11/2015 15:45

I think it is gorgeous. Would go so well with my surname.

Jemimapuddleduk · 29/11/2015 19:18

We love it and it suits our dd down to the ground. She has middle names Elizabeth and Joy.

Pringlesandwine · 29/11/2015 19:20

Lovely name :)

villainousbroodmare · 29/11/2015 19:22

None of MIL's business! She's had her chance. Grin

Gracey79 · 29/11/2015 19:23

Love iris and the goo goo dolls song of the same name!

Junosmum · 29/11/2015 23:30

Love it. It's my number one for a girl.

Monica101 · 30/11/2015 15:32

It's v nice. Also very international which is useful. It works in lots of countries, popular in Sweden right now for babies. Well known name in Holland, Germany, Spain and France.

Greyhorses · 30/11/2015 20:18

Thank you everyone.
I think we are pretty much sorted with Iris although I also like Ada.

Still time to change our minds though (and won't be telling Mil!)

Ada is so much lovelier and more unusual. Also Ada Lovelace, great heroine. Iris just sounds old ladylike to me and can be said in a rather unpoetic way. Aye-ris. Nicer in French, but we don't say it that way. Germans say it differently too. But that is ugly too....ear-ris.

bkay19 · 02/12/2015 15:44

I think it's beautiful however I like names that can easily give pet/nicknames which is what puts me off. But I know that's just a personal thing and I do think its a gorgeous name

CoraPirbright · 03/12/2015 22:47

So elegant!!

I wouldn't worry about your MIL - my DM hated my dd's name but as soon as she was born & became connected with it, DM changed her tune & now loves it! I am sure it will become the beautiful name of the adored grand child in no time!

Iggi999 · 04/12/2015 08:14

Anonoo, I know a couple of Ada's and no Iris', so I guess which is more unusual is down to where you live? I personally find Ada rather harsh sounding, your descriptions of the ugliness of Iris are a bit OTT!

AuntieStella · 04/12/2015 08:15

Some people will always think of eyeballs when they hear Iris.

NoSquirrels · 04/12/2015 10:24

I love Iris. A very firm favourite of mine.
Lydia is lovely too.

Just to echo what Auntie said, though - when I was growing up one of my teachers was called Miss I. Ball, which is quite bad enough, but the 'I' stood for Iris, which seems sort of particularly odd! So don't do it if your surname is Ball Grin
