Violet! I love it, wish I'd used it for DD. Matilda is nice, but round here there ate loads of Tillys.

Kim82 · 23/10/2015 20:10

Violet. It's one of my favourite ever names!

RedCheckedTablecloth · 23/10/2015 20:11

When I see the name Violet I just add an N and see Violent. Just a quirk of mine. Maybe due to Violet Elizabeth Bott.

Matilda is very pretty.

canyou · 23/10/2015 20:13

I have a Violet ? and she is never Vi, that is maybe because we have a older relation called Vi

BeautifulStars93 · 23/10/2015 20:17

canyou - what does she get for short, if anything?

OP posts:
canyou · 23/10/2015 20:21

Nothing it is a short enough name so 5 years on she is still just Violet (or jelly tot)Smile TBH I think it depends on your family, if as a rule you shorten names then pick a nn you like asap Wink

ThursdayLastWeek · 23/10/2015 20:25

Violet, there are faaaaaaar too many Tilly's IMO.
I even quite the shortening Vi tbh Smile

ElizabethG81 · 23/10/2015 20:37

I have a Violet Matilda, so wholly approve of either Smile We mostly don't shorten her name, but she sometimes gets Vi, V or if we're being silly Baby V. She likes to call herself Violet Tilda Grin

cantgonofurther · 23/10/2015 21:19

I love matilda. I hate tilly though.

Sophronia · 23/10/2015 22:20

Violet. Could be Lettie or Lottie for short?

scatterthenuns · 24/10/2015 16:51

Violet.

I have no strong feelings about Matilda - just think of Roald Dahl's.
Both Matt and Tilly aren't to my taste. I like Tilda as a nn though.

samjammy · 24/10/2015 17:03

Love Violet - one of my favourites but DH says the same about it being too close to the word Violent Hmm

I don't mind Vi though. I think that is a risk, so if you really dislike it maybe Matilda would be best. Though around here, it seems to morph into Tilda which I'm personally really not keen on.

thunderbird69 · 24/10/2015 17:09

I think Matilda is a very pretty name. Or Matild/Mathild

For some reason the name Violet gives me the image of a mean, unlikeable girl - not sure why?!

scatterthenuns · 24/10/2015 17:10

Violet Beauregarde, perhaps thunderbird?

Brummiegirl15 · 25/10/2015 08:31

Both names are on our list for our DD. I love both but DP hates Violet so hoping we can go for Matilda!

BeautifulStars93 · 26/10/2015 11:51

We're still very torn between the two! Will have to see what she looks like I think x

OP posts:
CruCru · 26/10/2015 13:58

Both are surprisingly popular, although I think I know more Matildas than Violets.

looki · 26/10/2015 20:24

Why surprisingly?

I prefer Matilda though I wonder is it the new Ava?

Dixiebell · 30/10/2015 15:57

Violet makes me think of Vile I'm afraid...Matilda could be shortened to Tilda instead of Tilly?

CruCru · 30/10/2015 22:04

Because they used to be the sort of names people chose to be different. I know two Violets and three Matildas.

SophieFaye · 01/11/2015 13:07

Violet is really pretty, but Matilda has better NNs :)

redbuttons · 01/11/2015 13:43

Vee is a common shortening of Violet.

sallymander · 01/11/2015 13:49

That's a really tricky one. Both are on my list too! Both really pretty, perhaps you can practice shouting the names out to try them out like "Violet, time for tea! or Matilda, please put your shoes on" I try that sometimes, to see which feels better. Smile

If you really don't like Vi, avoid Violet. She might decide to be called Vi herself.
