Morris or Maurice?

Are these goers as boys names or are we mental? How should we spell it? And what would it be shortened to? Mo, maybe. Or Moss if in 5 years time everyone has forgotten that IT Crowd ever existed.

I've always liked it. DP finally suggested it of his own volition the other day. Due date for first DS is in a week so we need to whittle down a shortlist! So far other possibilities are Arthur (we're in Wales, and it has it's own Welsh pronunciation which is a bonus) or Patrick. Middle name is a Sayce (family name) and surname begins with A.

Morris is a car.
Maurice is the correct spelling for the boy's name.

I know a Maurice - I think it is quite an old fashioned name but it has charm.

I like it, but would spell it Maurice. Who knows what it would be shortened to - Morry? Mossy? Go for it if you and DP both like it. There won't be many of them in his class!

I do also like Patrick a lot, but less keen on Arthur.

I like Morris, I think it's quite sweet.

Morris could be Mo, Moss, Morry... and Maurice could be Maury

RiverTam · 09/10/2015 13:51

Maurice.
Morris is a car, or a surname.

Maurice is a boys name.

Morris is a surname.

Mo moz moss mossy mozzy

Or anything else that suits him. No rule saying a nn has to be part of his name.

Great name.
Definitely Maurice.

BikeRunSki · 09/10/2015 19:10

I also prefer "Maurice" for the spelling of a first name rather than surname.
My dad had a great uncle (so quite some time ago) called Maurice, known as Rick.

SunshineAndShadows · 10/10/2015 00:37

n my head they're pronounced differently.
Morris - as spelled
Maurice - As in the Joker song by Steve Miller band: "Some people call me the space cowboy, yeah. Some call me the gangster of love . Some people call me Maurice"
And it's sung 'More-Reece'

So I prefer Morris

WhataRacquet · 10/10/2015 01:00

Maurice. I love that name.

BikeRunSki · 10/10/2015 07:15

Maurice is pronounced as "Morris" throughout the film of EM Foster's book "Maurice".

CakeRattleandRoll · 10/10/2015 07:17

Exactly what Sunshine said above.

RiverTam · 10/10/2015 10:31

More-eece is the French pronunciation, Morris is the English.

bruffin · 10/10/2015 10:51

My uncle was Maurice and my DM used to call him Mar. He was welsh, my mum had a frenchified name as well, but they were both born back in the 30s

Muskey · 10/10/2015 10:55

How about Morrison I cam across one quite recently and really liked it. Sorry but don't like the spelling of Maurice it makes me think of an older camp male hairdresse

Footle · 10/10/2015 11:07

You can spell it Morris if you want , and it avoids the Maureece pronunciation. If you want a precedent, there was Morris Sugden, Nobel prize winner born around 1920. And lots more I'm sure.
