I think I've found the ultimate 'dodgy spelling of normal baby name to try and make it unique'

Grace is quite a nice name. So is Gracie as a nn.

So what's the consensus on 'Graicae'? Hmm

I've found what is either a very interesting version of Leah or is actually 'ledasha' on the Scottish names list.

Backforthis · 06/10/2015 00:17

But whatever the name is, the parents chose it because they think it's a beautiful, special name for their baby.

SouthernComforts my friend's son is called Jaxon. He was named after a character in the Dragon Riders of Pern books by Anne McCaffery and she hadn't noticed that it was just a crap spelling of a fairly normal name until other people pointed it out. I wasn't quite sure where to start judging really. Grin

WhyCantIuseTheNameIWant · 06/10/2015 08:31

I knew a maffoo too

On here recently was mentioned a feo...

We know a lili, but that's the traditional shortening of her full name in France.

Knew a giorgia once. She was Italian.

Can't beat any of yours. Sad

whitelisbon · 06/10/2015 09:14

I know a jorja.

Sighing · 06/10/2015 09:33

Jaxon is from a book I believe.

HammerToFall · 06/10/2015 09:33

I know a Jess-c-mai produced Jessie may

Sighing · 06/10/2015 09:37

Oh god. I know a Jorja as well. I kept telling myself clearly I was missing some heritage link and mentally chiding myself for mentally flinching. I then met the mother, apparently spelling it Georgia made it look too much like she wanted a boy(??) AND would be hard to spell.

Liomsa · 06/10/2015 09:45

Some of this is a bit Little Englander.

As a pp said, Daniyal is a perfectly valid name, foreign in origin rather than someone trying to be 'unique'. And a meaningful political name for some -Daniyal was a Palestinian village destroyed during the 1948 Arab-Israeli war.

And Jaxon, whether or not you like it as a variant of Jackson, has been in the top 200 names in the US for years, and there are people like the cartoonist Jaxon, who was born in the 1940s - it was his pen name rather than a birth name, but it's been around for a while.

Crazypetlady · 06/10/2015 10:37

My boys name is a common name spelt different as it is the Norwegian version which is in a way I prefer. Some of these are terrible though.

LisbethSalandersLaptop · 06/10/2015 10:42

" (when you think about it there is no 'ch' sound in Chloe and if I saw loe on its own then I would read it as low "

but Chloe is a Greek name, Ch makes a K sound just like 'school' or 'chaos'.
And L-da is definitely an urban myth.

Narp · 06/10/2015 18:42

Airwreccka is hard to beat

Iknow od an

R'marni

HarryLimeFoxtrot · 06/10/2015 22:42

I know a Jorja too.

Unique spellings have been around for years though. Examples from when I was at school in the 1980s:
Dorne
Peater
Looize
Serra
Darryn
Wain

(I also had a friend called Julie who used to exasperate her parents by insisting on spelling her name 'Duly' - she grew out of it and reverted to the normal spelling).

Tootsiepops · 06/10/2015 22:48

On the other site, someone asked what folk thought of the name J-Cub.

HarryLimeFoxtrot · 06/10/2015 22:54

Oh - two of the 1980s examples above were actually hyphenated. Anyone want to guess which ones?

Pipbin · 06/10/2015 22:57

But whatever the name is, the parents chose it because they think it's a beautiful, special name for their baby.

And here is the problem, it's not a name for just a baby is it. It's a name for a 16 year old, a 40 year old, a 28 year old. They are not naming a puppy, they are naming a human being who will have to spend their whole life not being taken seriously or repeatedly having to spell their name.

but Chloe is a Greek name, Ch makes a K sound just like 'school' or 'chaos'.

This is true, but it could be argued that Klowii phonetically says Chloe more than Chloe does.

SmellyHead · 06/10/2015 23:01

Rob't

That one had me hoicking my judgy-pants.

Piffpaffpoff · 06/10/2015 23:02

I know of a Ladashla, spelt La-la. Tellytubbies fan maybe?

DickDewy · 06/10/2015 23:05

The worst I know in RL are an Allyce and a Kate-Lynn (I know that one might be a name, but it screams trailer park to me).

And once Allyce went to uni a year ago, she started spelling her name Alice!

Liomsa · 06/10/2015 23:15

You know something - I'm going to actually give a prize to the first person to produce official documentary evidence of the existence of an actual child called La-a.

PrincessTooty · 06/10/2015 23:21

Everyone knows of a La-a but I bet no one know an actual La-a. Wink

Pipbin · 06/10/2015 23:24

There was one at a school where I taught for a short while. However I don't think I ever met her.
This was about 8 years ago now. If I had known the doubt it would cause I would have been sure to meet her and produce her birth certificate!

WhoTheFuckIsSimon · 06/10/2015 23:31

I give you KT. Honest truth.

Ricardian · 06/10/2015 23:35

I assume that KT Tunstall is a tribute to the short-lived KT Bush Band. One's Kate Victoria. The other is Catherine.

Pipbin · 06/10/2015 23:36

Seems there was 8 of them in 2006!
