It's awful, sorry. I strongly dislike all surnames as first names but this is one of the worse ones. It sounds very Amercian, trying to be trendy and I think it will date very quickly. What about Archie?

I don't mind it as a name, but like PPs I associate it very much with the TV programme, which I love (see username!) But wouldn't want to name a baby after Sterling Archer

I don't like it, Archie is slightly better.

I like Archer John. Archer was an English chemist who shared the 1952 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for the invention of partition chromatography with Richard Synge.

I like it a lot actually - it's on our boys' names longlist - but I don't think we'll be brave enough to actually use it.

Just makes me think of Jeffrey, sorry. Also, it could so easily turn into Archie, which is horrible.

Haven't seen the TV programme but my first thought is The Archers tbh.

Absolutely loooooove, one of our front runners. Hear it quite a lot on here though along with Asher so maybe it's growing in popularity? Not mad about the insipid Archie.

Have never made the connection with Jeffrey though and never heard of the TV show so maybe those points would put me off now!

Disagree about the TV show comments. It's not that big or cult a show / no one will be talking about it in 5 yrs time / the character is in fact called Stirling Archer - ie Archer is his surname (as it is for so many people since it is a surname after all).
Agree that if you hate Archie then it might not be the best choice.
Agree that it is kind of preppy American in style, but that's not a bad thing imo.
Totally biased as we have a two year old Archer :) - but then we are English/Scots for whom it is an old family name. He gets called Archer or Arch (and Archie as a toddler by our UK relatives!) And we also live in the States right now where the name, and those similar to it, is pretty normal and popular. Funnily enough Americans are always saying to is 'oh what a very English name!' - while everyone back home thinks it's totally American.

Archer is a fine name! But I don't live in uk so have no association with anything about the show.

Awful. American in the worst way. You could always go for the set and call his brother Sniper, though.

I don't like the sound of it, sorry. But Archie is even less nice imo. And overused.
