Nate?

My previous thread was about DH not coming round to the only name I like for 2 day old DS ( and yes, he did watch me go through labour for the third time!!)... which is Xavier (my Dad's family is from Portugal)

So I've had a reluctant look around and I think I also like Nate. I really don't like Nathan though and not sure I want such a long name as Nathaniel as our 2 DC both have short names.

What do you think of it?

Thanks!

That's good Smile.

I was going to say what a shame DH doesn't like Xavier. I'm not keen on Nate - although do like Nathaniel and Nathan.

Out of interest, how are you pronouncing Xavier - with a Z sound or with a H sound?

HarlettOScara · 11/09/2015 17:27

I like it. Reminds me of Nate from 6 Feet Under. Also love Nathaniel but not Nathan.

TerrysNo3 · 11/09/2015 17:54

With a Z!

Nate is definitely a nn, I wouldn't use it as his full first name. Personally I like Nathaniel. I think Nate works fine for a kid/teenager/young man but not as well for a man in his 50s.

Love Xavier and Nate. Also love Nat.
Nat could be short for Jonathan.
Congratulations. Enjoy your boy.

cornishglos · 12/09/2015 07:19

Do you like Fabien? It's French like Xavier. Pronounced Fab not Fabe like the English Fabian.
I ask as I love it but can't use it, and I also love your other choices, and Fab is a very cool nn.

Mclaren37 · 23/09/2015 06:03

Love Xavier and Nate. Probably slightly prefer Nate, nice and classic. Perfect as a short name for Nathaniel. I like that Nate can be a nn but also works as 'proper' shorter name if he prefers it as he grows up.

Mclaren37 · 23/09/2015 06:05

Gabriel / Gabe would be another similar idea if you're looking for more ideas?

Giraffe5 · 23/09/2015 06:09

I like it as a nickname for Nathaniel but it's too American for me I'm afraid.

I don't hate it though but it is unusual for where I live in UK and I only know one but he is a Nathaniel

missmakesstuff · 23/09/2015 06:46

I have a Nathaniel, Nate or Nat as a nickname. Nate's a cool dude. Probably a surfer. The ladies like him.
(He's only 5 months old but it's true, he does charm the ladies..)

Longer names are good I think as they give the child the flexibility and a bit more choice as they get older about what they're called.
Saying that, I do find people call him Nathan when I tell them his full name and it annoys me.he didn't have a name for 5 weeks as we couldn't agree, we tried out a few and he's slowly growing into his name.

CheerfulYank · 23/09/2015 06:55

I love Nate. I am American though :) I only like it short for Nathan or Nathaniel, I have to say.

I hope you get Xavier since you love it!

TerrysNo3 · 23/09/2015 16:27

Just seen that this thread has revived and I hate an unfinished thread! DH couldn't come round to Xavier and we were both a bit unsure about Nate although I still think it's nice.

In the end we found a name we both liked, think surname of Uptown Girl singer (who I love!).

Along with Noah, Nate is my joint most hated boys name. Nathaniel is nice enough in its entirety.

Mclaren37 · 23/09/2015 20:20

Great choice TerrysNo3! Congrats!

CheerfulYank · 24/09/2015 13:24

Oh that's nice Terry :)

I agree with FattyNinjaOwl. Enjoy the cuddles. My Nathan is 14 and does not want to cuddle his DM. Sad
