Please share your thoughts. We can't decide and just can't agree on one of them!

Which do you prefer: Amelie or Lydia?

Small petite girl, blue eyes & light brown hair.

At first I preferred Amelie. It sounds so beautiful and rolls of the tongue easily. The only thing that puts me off Amelie is the variation in pronounciation and spelling. I can't stand that people repeat it a few times to see if I said Emily.
Now, I'm thinking Lydia... But it doesn't sound as nice?

Lydia sounds more like a forever name, not just a name for a cute little girl. But I like that it is a simple strong classic name. Everyone can say and spell it.

(I am aware that Lydia rhymes with Clamydia but really think it does not matter at all)

Amelie is better by miles! My called her baby it recently. Dont like Lydia at all, think it sounds a bit clunky..

EldonAve · 08/09/2015 23:28

I prefer Lydia

mrsschu · 08/09/2015 23:29

Amelie is beautiful! It was on my shortlist if DC2 had been a girl! It sounds classy and will make a great name for a woman as well as a girl. Do people really here Emily if you say Amelie?! Lydia is very blah IMO, sounds frumpy in comparison.

anothernumberone · 08/09/2015 23:31

I like Amelie not so much Lydia.

NeuNewNouveau · 08/09/2015 23:34

I like Amelie, Lydia is a bit harsh sounding imho.

LettuceLaughton · 08/09/2015 23:34

Lydia

Amelie is lovely but the potential for confusion would put me off.

Amelia? It almost a mix of both.

calzone · 08/09/2015 23:35

How about Eliza?

Sgtmajormummy · 08/09/2015 23:37

Lydia

5BlueHydrangea · 08/09/2015 23:37

I like Lydia. Wouldnt have thought of chlamydia! my dd's name sounds a little like Lydia so some times people think i've said that. i know one child called that, about 10 years old. pretty name.

Amelie is far too popular.

Sgtmajormummy · 08/09/2015 23:39

Congratulations, of course!Flowers Flowers

CelestiaLuna · 08/09/2015 23:40

Lydia

Amelie sounds naff to me unless you're French

DramaAlpaca · 08/09/2015 23:46

I prefer Lydia. I like the sound of it better than Amelie, and I think it's a stronger name.

Congrats, btw Flowers

UrbaneFox · 08/09/2015 23:50

Lydia. There are just so many Amelias and Amelies and Emilias and so on

Lydia is lovely.

UrbaneFox · 08/09/2015 23:52

ps, also, Lydia will date less.

Lydia's 'rank' in the stats didn't race up very quickly. It stayed very steady moving up a place or two every year. Slow rise. Never got in to the top ten.

I researched this when my own dd was born!

HeteronormativeHaybales · 08/09/2015 23:53

Lydia. Strong, classic, melodious.

Far too many Amelies around. It's a pretty name but I think it will date her (even more than Amelia would).

HeteronormativeHaybales · 08/09/2015 23:55

And yes yes to an Amelie probably spending a significant portion of her life telling people 'no, it's not Emily/Amelia/Emilia...'

Linguaphile · 09/09/2015 00:16

Lydia gets my vote; much more classic. Amelie feels a bit 'of the moment' to me.

NanaNina · 09/09/2015 00:55

Another vote for Lydia - Amelia is one of the most popular girls names at the moment and is very like Amelie and she will be forever having to spell it and correct people calling her Amelia, Emily etc.

Strokethefurrywall · 09/09/2015 01:00

Yep - Lydia by a mile.

Not cutesy or overused. It's strong and defined. I imagine a little Lydia to grow to be a tiny little badass.

Devora · 09/09/2015 01:00

Lydia - lovely name.

flohen · 09/09/2015 04:12

Lydia. Amelie is a beautiful name if you're French.

Colyngbourne · 09/09/2015 07:29

Lydia

Verypissedoffwife · 09/09/2015 07:52

I prefer Lydia

Amelie is nice too buy there are quite a few Amelie where I live. Not that it matters of course - just that if there's more than one in a class it will always be "Amelie C" or whatever

ObsidianBlackbirdMcNight · 09/09/2015 08:11

I hate the proliferation of english Amelie's since the mid 90s. It sounds naff in anything other than a French accent. Go for Lydia, it's pretty

VB111 · 09/09/2015 08:12

Lydia for all of the reasons stated above! Congratulations!
