Please share your thoughts. We can't decide and just can't agree on one of them!

Which do you prefer: Amelie or Lydia?

Small petite girl, blue eyes & light brown hair.

At first I preferred Amelie. It sounds so beautiful and rolls of the tongue easily. The only thing that puts me off Amelie is the variation in pronounciation and spelling. I can't stand that people repeat it a few times to see if I said Emily.
Now, I'm thinking Lydia... But it doesn't sound as nice?

Lydia sounds more like a forever name, not just a name for a cute little girl. But I like that it is a simple strong classic name. Everyone can say and spell it.

(I am aware that Lydia rhymes with Clamydia but really think it does not matter at all)

Lydia, very pretty and elegant, and not too common. Not a fan of Amelie. It sounds like someone mid pronouncing Emily to me. I like Amelia, through.

KaraokeQueenOfTheNorth · 09/09/2015 08:21

Definitely Lydia. Beautiful name. I know a 5yr old Lydia and she is lovely :-)

Amelie sounds like you are not sure if it is Emily or Amelia, I'm not keen at all, sorry. Lydia I absolutely love.

BreeVDKamp · 09/09/2015 08:31

Lydia Lydia Lydia!! Refreshing name. Amelie is a bit blah IMO. And too much like Emiky which is VERY blah.

Sounds like she'd suit Lydia!

Congratulations Flowers

I have a petite brown-haired Lydia and she's definitely a badass in the making - Lydia all the way!!

Congratulations Flowers

AskingForAPal · 09/09/2015 08:38

Definitely Lydia, it's a really pretty name. And Liddy is a really sweet nickname too. I hear looooads of mums shouting after their little Amelies, and I agree with others that it will probably sound as dated in the future as all the Michelles and Leannes and Kylies of the past sound now.

Do let us know what you go for!

MouldyPeach · 09/09/2015 08:42

Definitely Lydia, Amelie is very popular and it's hard to think of it as a woman's name. Even the film Amelie is a cutesy girl child.

MaudeTheMopLady · 09/09/2015 08:43

Lydia is perfect. Beautiful, timeless, elegant, gorgeous. Best name ever.
There are hundreds of Amelie's.
Congratulations!

Lydia

WorldsBiggestGrotbag · 09/09/2015 08:49

Congratulations!
Lydia definitely. Beautiful name. Agree with a PP that Amelie sounds a bit naff if you're not French.

mollie123 · 09/09/2015 09:00

Amelie needs an accent (acute) to sound right as it is a french name
it is also the name of a character in a film so lots of people will use it for their 'film star' children
Lydia is a lovely classic name that has stood the test of time

RiverTam · 09/09/2015 09:04

BeautifulStars93 · 09/09/2015 09:06

RalphSteadmansEye · 09/09/2015 09:10

Lydia is much nicer. Strong and beautiful.

There are so many Amelies, Amelias and Emilys around. Thousands.

TenQuidProQuo · 09/09/2015 09:13

Lydia is a lovely name.

TreadSoftlyOnMyDreams · 09/09/2015 09:13

Amelie / Amelia is lovely but so is Lydia [not very helpful]

I prefer the European spelling of Lydia which is Lidia

redexpat · 09/09/2015 09:39

You know that htere's a song called Lydia the tattooed lady? I think originally it was by Groucho Marx, but

LittleBearPad · 09/09/2015 09:47

Lydia, Lydia, Lydia

If DS had been a DD I would have campaigned for Lydia. It's a lovely name and Lyddie/Lyddy is a sweet nickname.

Amelie is meh and too much like Amelia/Emily etc etc

Eva50 · 09/09/2015 09:47

Definitely Lydia. It's lovely

ILoveMyMonkey · 09/09/2015 09:53

Amelie is very popular at the moment which might be a consideration. Lydia is lovely, I'd go with that.

MajesticWhine · 09/09/2015 09:55

Snowfilledsky · 09/09/2015 10:00

Lydia. I had two boys but that was my girls name. That and Claudia.

Judydreamsofhorses · 09/09/2015 10:02

Lydia is beautiful. Amelie is very pretty, but absolutely everywhere.

Sophronia · 09/09/2015 10:16

Definitely Lydia.

AskingForAPal · 09/09/2015 10:44

Just checked out the Office for National Statistics stuff on baby names that came out in August. The first line says: "Oliver and Amelia were the most popular first names given to babies born in England and Wales in 2014. Amelia has been in the top spot since 2011." Amelia is further down but the names are so similar they will always be mixed up. About six and a half thousand babies were named Amelia or Amelie last year. Another five thousand or so were called Emily or Emilia. That makes more than 11,000 little girls called things v similar to Amelie, versus only about 600 called Lydia.

You may not care of course, I'm just a geek for stats :)

chrome100 · 09/09/2015 14:44

Amelie is nice but does sound like "Emily" and maybe a bit odd if you have no French connections.

Lydia is lovely.
