Please share your thoughts. We can't decide and just can't agree on one of them!

Which do you prefer: Amelie or Lydia?

Small petite girl, blue eyes & light brown hair.

At first I preferred Amelie. It sounds so beautiful and rolls of the tongue easily. The only thing that puts me off Amelie is the variation in pronounciation and spelling. I can't stand that people repeat it a few times to see if I said Emily.
Now, I'm thinking Lydia... But it doesn't sound as nice?

Lydia sounds more like a forever name, not just a name for a cute little girl. But I like that it is a simple strong classic name. Everyone can say and spell it.

(I am aware that Lydia rhymes with Clamydia but really think it does not matter at all)

I'd rather be named after scandalous party girl Lydia Bennet than that twee little miss from the awful Amelie film.

AskingForAPal · 09/09/2015 17:13

Innit though, squoosh.

Actually I like the film Amelie, but I wouldn't be keen on naming my daughter after her as she would inevitably become a massive body-building thrash metal fan who shaves her head, and have to put up with people pointing out the contrast all the time.

OctoberCupcake · 09/09/2015 17:31

I like both, but have a slight preference for Lydia as it's more unusual.

I wouldn't worry about the Amelie/Emily thing though. I'm called Becky and am regularly called Jackie, Vicky, Betty, and more bizarrely, Debbie. I don't think it matters what your name is, people can/will always mishear it! Grin

AskingForAPal · 09/09/2015 18:55

Good point October. I regularly have people call me a completely different half-rhyme of my name too, e.g. Claire instead of Fay. It's weird.

NadiaWadia · 09/09/2015 18:56

I like Lydia. Classic and classy and not over-popular.

Amelie is very pretty, but very 'now' I think. It may seem dated in the future (at least in the UK).

cornishglos · 09/09/2015 19:06

I love Lydia. I don't know why Amelie is so popular. It's not as nice.

hawkmcqueen · 09/09/2015 19:10

Lydia, know a 3 year old Lydia so it became a little girl name to me and it is very nice.

I cannot pronounce Amelie properly and struggle with it. I also find it wishy washy.

Good luck choosing!

MamaLazarou · 09/09/2015 21:19

Lydia! Amelie has connotations with that awful film.

Onedirectionarestillloved · 09/09/2015 22:04

Lydia.

It's dd1 s middle name.

overthemill · 09/09/2015 22:05

So many Amelie's since the movie. I quite like Lydia but prefer Emilia

AMonsterInParis · 09/09/2015 22:05

Love the name Lydia. I wanted it for DC2 but then he came out a boy!

ashesandfire · 09/09/2015 22:19

Lydia is beautiful and underused. I think Amelie is a bit trendy/faddy and will date more. Plus it just blurs into all the Amelias/Emilias/Amelies/Emilys/Mias/Ellas/Ellies etc

thinkingSilver · 25/09/2015 12:18

Thank you for all the responses! I could not believe how many people responded. I could also not believe that the overwhelming majority voted for Lydia.

I really really loved the sound of Amelie. I had it in my head a long time, without knowing how popular it was. But I hated that people could not pronounce it. People said all sorts of things when they read it!! I absolutely HATE that. And they also said Emily. I considered Emily also, because it sort of sounds the same, it has the same 'feeling'. But our surname starts with an E and the alliteration is just too obvious.

We have been calling her Lydie as a nick name for some time now and it is so sweet. We registered her as Lydia Amelie! :)

Thank you!! xx

Congratulations Flowers

YellowOfficeBlock · 26/09/2015 15:41

Aw, I like them both, but prefer Lydia. Congratulations Thanks

Twickerhun · 26/09/2015 15:48

Because I know an horrifically badly behaved 8 year old nightmare girl called lydia I'd go for Amelia. also shortening lydia isn't easy. There are no pretty versions Lids? lyddie both sound harsh to me.

Devora · 26/09/2015 19:56

Ouch Twickerhun, that's bad timing Grin

thinkingSilver, I think Lydia Amelie is a truly beautiful name - congratulations on your lovely daughter.

celtictoast · 26/09/2015 20:43

Congratulations! Smile

KERALA1 · 26/09/2015 21:53

Lydia. Definitely. Amelie dull and faddish.
