It's Biblical, hence its traditional popularity in Wales (not mega popular, but a fair smattering in every generation).

Its origin is obscure, but it's possibly from the Greek meaning "more desirable" or "better". It might even be a name made up by a Jewish family living among Greek speakers to translate the Hebrew name Naomi.

As Doiilook says, it's pronounced Loys in Welsh - doesn't help that the word "loes" meaning "pain" is pronounced almost identically (though it's a less common word than "poen").

Not a problem if you use the English/American pronunciations Low-is, of course.
