What is the problem with the name Delilah?

coveredinsnot · 31/08/2015 11:00

Is it just the biblical reference and meaning seductress?

I really like this name and we're struggling to find names we both like for our imminent DD.

Are there any other names that have a similar sound without the issues?

There isn't a problem with Delilah, it's a fairly popular name now and I doubt they get an old Tom Jones song sung at them!

Squooshed · 31/08/2015 11:53

I bet they will.

A lot.

mabythesea · 31/08/2015 11:56

The one I know hasn't. I can imagine it's a bit of a Nanna thing but are parents at playgroup, teachers at school, other kids going to sing a 50 year old song at her? No.

Squooshed · 31/08/2015 11:58

And will the only people she interacts with throughout her life just be people of her own age and generation?

Er, no!

QOD · 31/08/2015 12:04

Sorry I like a song about a murder (never even noticed that).

mabythesea · 31/08/2015 12:05

I imagine most Tom Jones fans will be dead by the time today's Delilahs are adults Grin

Ziar · 31/08/2015 12:13

I the question should be, what's right with it.

PermetsTu · 31/08/2015 12:13

My 7yo niece is a Delilah.

Most people do know the Tom Jones song tbh. We've just been on a big family holiday and the young teens in the tent next door started singing the Tom Jones song to her (they were being friendly). People do make the occasional biblical whore reference too. Smile

I'm named after a Beach Boys song and people of my generation and younger still sing it on hearing my name. In fact, I met my idol last month and he sang it to me. First time I've not minded tbh.

PuppyMonkey · 31/08/2015 12:21

We know a six year old Delilah - nn Lilah. I love it.

Think you're kidding yourself if you think the Tom Jones song will die out. That's a definite all time classic there, it will always get played like Beatles and Elvis songs.

Squooshed · 31/08/2015 12:22

Oooh, Rhonda? Barbara Ann? Cindy? Wendy?

I can imagine having your idol sing 'your' song would be mildly less irritating than some drunken eejit singing it! Grin

BackforGood · 31/08/2015 12:40

I would burst into the Tom Jones song every time I heard it (mind, I do that with all Olivers too - not Tom Jones you understand, but the musical).

It's not a song that will die out, and certainly my 3dc all know it well Wink

coveredinsnot · 31/08/2015 12:51

Since posting this question, I've been (very badly) singing the Tom Jones song. My poor foetus. Tbh there are so many names in the world I think I'll be able to find a better one with no negative or annoying associations. Will keep looking!

Delilah, Tallulah etc are comedy names. Terrible, infantile, tacky names that don't work on adults.

PermetsTu · 31/08/2015 14:08

The first one Squoosh.

What is most irritating is the way the drunken eejit slurs the song and then looks expectantly at you because they are clearly the first person to ever think of the connection between your name and the pretty well known song it comes from and obviously, they want a round of applause for their ingenuity.

coveredinsnot · 31/08/2015 14:42

scatter lol! I guess that's one way of looking at them. Whar are your top 5 girls names?

I am not religious but I really hate the name Delilah because of the betrayal thing. Not a nice person, why saddle your child with that reference. However I really like the Gabriela Faith name. Priests must come up against all sorts of names and not really understand what was in people's minds but that name as far as I know has no backstory and is pretty undateable and unclassable.

Kukoo · 29/07/2016 19:11

I really like it

UnikittyInHerBusinessSuit · 29/07/2016 19:17

I think that people will sing "Why, why why?" to little Delilahs for ever. And that would be fine and only slightly irritating if it was a neutral song like, say, Cecilia by Simon and Garfunkel. But Delilah is a pretty grim story of murderous DV, so I absolutely couldn't live with it day in day out.

UnikittyInHerBusinessSuit · 29/07/2016 19:19

See also, Eileen, and predictable song coupled with predictable double entendres.

Yes the biblical ref comes to mind immediately so it has negative connotations.
There are certain names for kids that are just too emotive in history or myth to be used without hassle.
I would avoid.
The Tom jones song is violent so it isn't very good by association either.

BunnyBunnyMooseMoose · 30/07/2016 00:03

Dahlia?

CodewordRochambeau · 30/07/2016 01:38

zombie thread, folks - little Delilah is eleven months old now.

PterodactylToenails · 01/08/2016 20:48

I love it, there was a beautiful girl at my school called this. People need to get over the Tom Jones song....how old is that song and who even sings it now? I am quite sure children in the playground won't be singing it, they won't know it!
