Nickname - can Freya be shortened or is it impossible?

I like the idea of a name that can't be made into a nickname. I think Freya is pretty and fits the bill - what do you think? :)

My friend has a ds called Thomas, and so do I. Mine became Tom very quickly, but she insisted hers would never be called Tom. He isn't - he is now known to everyone by the name his friends call him - Toz. She hates it!

Freya is a nickname in itself, from Frederica.

Clawdy · 31/08/2015 15:25

No, Freya was a Norse goddess.

WWYDinThisSituation · 31/08/2015 17:37

Ummm, Freya is definitely not a nickname! She was a goddess of many things.

And definitely not from Frederica! Grin

Confused

Ruth,Jane and Claire are fairly shortening-proof, but that doesn't mean they won't get nick names one way or another.

As pp have said, lots of short names get lengthened - some that I know are
Kate / Katie
Zoe / Zozo
Anne / Annie.

Freya is a lovely name, and you can control what other adults and family members call her to a certain extent, but not what her friends call her once she is at school.

I'm a Clare and I've never forgiven my parents for giving me a name you can't shorten. IMO well no it's fact because it's how I feel, it has taken away my right to a preferred name I could use. Haven't even got a bloody MN either .

My sister hates the fact she has no alternative too (Paula). I gave DD the name Elizabeth so she could chose as many alternatives going....not sure there is a name with more options tbh. Though she has been Beth from birth.

BBQsAreSooooOverrated · 02/09/2015 14:50

Our Freya gets called freyfrey so it's been made longer.

bloodyteenagers · 02/09/2015 17:41

Freya, from the old Norse name Freyja meaning lady.

Frederica, is from the masculine German name of Frederick. It means peaceful ruler.

NotMeNotYouNotAnyone · 03/09/2015 17:18

Any name can and will be shortened. Even if you go with a permanent nickname like Ed or Sam or Tom people will lengthen it! My parents tried, my name isn't cmnonly shortened, it's fairly unusual and has no obvious nicknames but I've had several shortened forms over the years and other nicknames too

nooka · 04/09/2015 04:07

My mother is a Clare partly because my grandmother thought it couldn't be shortened. My grandfather immediately started calling her Clarabella, which became Bellabee and then Bee. Given the will any name can be made into a nickname!
