What do we all think? Would you use Herbie or Herbert on b/c? A friend recently had a Herbie and I'm surprised how much I like it!

It is so bad.

Squooshed · 28/08/2015 22:57

I could not call a child Herbert. Even an evil alien child who was sent to earth to take over the planet and force all earthlings into inter galactic slavery.

I can imagine Herbie is cute on a fat little baby though. I think it would stop being cute after age 3 though.

Daphnedolittle · 28/08/2015 22:59

Squoosh!! Grin after age 3 Herb would be pretty cool though.

Herb would definitely be more acceptable. But I think he'd have to be a beatnik style cool cat to pull it off to full effect.

RedToothBrush · 29/08/2015 08:55

'He's a right Herbert' is enough to put me off.

Herbie and Herb are ok, but would still probably get the above.

Costacoffeeplease · 29/08/2015 08:58

Oh god no, Herbert is just awful

MamaLazarou · 29/08/2015 09:05

herbert - definition of herbert in English from the Oxford dictionary
www.oxforddictionaries.com › definition
An undistinguished or foolish man or youth: a bunch of spotty herberts ... Origin. 1960s: the male given name Herbert.

Daphnedolittle · 29/08/2015 09:48

Wow ok if I ever have a boy I will not be using Herbert. Still like Herbie though. I'm normally a full name on bc kind of person though!

OP posts:
Daphnedolittle · 29/08/2015 09:52

When it says origin in 1960's does that mean when the definition came into use? That would explain why so many men were called Herbert in the early 1900's and it was perfectly acceptable. I had a great uncle Herbert.

We know a little herbie. He is Herbert on BC. Perfectly normal, cute 2year old.

Herbie was high on my list for dc2, but she is a dd.

No worse than the collection of jemimas and ruperts around here.

I think it's cute. And herb is funky for an older kid.

ThedementedPenguin · 29/08/2015 10:05

I have a Herbie.. He will be 3 now in September.

He is just Herbie (Herbert just seemed so old).

I've only had one bad experience when people hear his name, everyone raves about his name when they hear it.

Daphnedolittle · 29/08/2015 10:35

Well I think you made an excellent choice thedemented - super cute on a little boy and Herb is cool on a teenager or man. Smile

I love it!

PowerPantsRule · 01/09/2015 21:15

I wanted this name. I was vetoed. Still bitter. Go for it!

Daphnedolittle · 01/09/2015 21:52

Power - did you want Herbie or Herbert?
I think I would go for Herbie now.

SanityClause · 01/09/2015 21:57

I love this name. It was my grandfather's name, but he was always called Bert.

However, I had a friend at school whose nickname was Herbie (based on his surname, which wasn't Herbert).

No one says "spotty little 'erbert" anymore. They may have done in the 1960s.

BakingBunty · 03/09/2015 21:17

Love it. Was our choice for DC2 who turned out to be DD Grin
