What names do YOU think are popular?

So, our new arrival is weeks away and I am becoming obsessed with the popularity of the names on our short list... Looking at the latest ONS statistics I'm struck by how it doesn't particularly reflect the names I hear a lot, for example I know no Amelias or Jacks but multiple Irises and Laurences. I imagine it's partially down to geography (I'm in London) but I'd be really interested to know what names you come across a lot among babies/ small children.

Oh yeah also Rosa and Isla and strangely three girls called Eloise.

TattieHowkerz · 05/09/2015 20:52

Girls: Isla, Annabelle, Mia, Lily.
Boys: Alexander, Alfie.

If you want something guaranteed to be unique amongst peers how about Derek, Ian, Geoff, Anne, Eileen or Bernadette?

mewkins · 05/09/2015 21:01

Hundreds of Ethans, Jacks, Sophies, Sophias and Isabels here. Also plenty of Lilys, Poppys and Amelies.

Madbengalmum · 06/09/2015 20:12

Everybody is calling their kid jude around here, and i hate it.

Madbengalmum · 06/09/2015 20:12

Oh and eve or variants and isabelle and variants, tedious!

toastedbeagle · 07/09/2015 01:25

It's obvious - you just choose something that was popular in your mother's generation - that'll be v unusual and no one will like it but will be ahead of it's time by 20 years smile

That's exactly what my parents did - named me after my Dad's mother, everyone else was avoiding the old lady name like the plague and now I'm 40, my name is the most-repeated girls' name on this thread (starts with I). Way ahead of the curve.

Girls names I perceive to be overly popular:

My name and all its variants
Ava
Ruby
Evie
Isla
Daisy/Poppy, et al
Hannah
Sophie/a
Lily
Olivia
Amelia
Grace
May
Rose (as a middle / -hyphenated name)

Charlie
Archie
Harry
Oliver
Finn
Flynn
Jack
Max
Thomas/Tom

London - Olivia (loads) Sophie, Isabella, Maya, Maia. Jack, Noah, Callum, Zachary / Zach.

My boys have names that have cropped up loads on this list. When we chose them, we purposely went for names that everyone's heard of but weren't particularly popular. I knew loads of children before I had mine and had never come across any of these names. Now there's bloody loads of them irritating

BalloonSlayer · 07/09/2015 06:40

Not so much a name but, for girls, but names with "l" sounds are all- pervading.

Ellie, Ella, Amelia, Lily, Molly, Alicia, Alisha, Elisha (and a million variants) Lola, Emily, Amelie, go forbid a girl's name should not have an L in it!

missnatalie · 07/09/2015 07:00

Boston, really? I've never heard of that name.

KERALA1 · 10/09/2015 20:03

Eve and all its variants (Eva/Evie). This name is officially full and still they come...Most classes at DDs school have at least 3 Eve type names.

Isabel/lla

Lily, Amelia, Sophie

Ben, Oliver

Nation us too. Thought I was (and I was at the time!) being innovative. Was too clever - now lots of babies with DD1s (aged 9) name. Grrr

My DCs now in their 30s have names which are suddenly very popular. Names do go in and out of fashion.

I'm in the SE and the popular names I hear are

Sonny
Billy
Charlie
Alfie
Isaac

Amelia / Amelie
Fifi
Daisy
Maisie
Tilly / Milly / Millie

Comingroundthemountain · 10/09/2015 20:45

Dd started school today (inner city London) and I found it interesting that the sixty children in her year group had no name duplications at all. The nearest was Juliet/Julia. Probably about half the kids have migrant parents although some of them had the more traditional names we think of as English, eg a Romanian Edward.

Jemimapuddleduk · 10/09/2015 20:45

In the north west I have come across a lot of:
Poppy, Lily, Eva/Evie/Ava, Emily/Emilia, grace, Mya/Mia/maya, sophie/Sophia, Florence
Oliver, Harry, Thomas, Noah, Isaac/Zac/Zachary

cheddaraddict · 11/09/2015 08:04

Thanks everyone, this is really interesting.

No mention of one of the names we like, only one mention of the other. Now I just need to decide how popular is too popular for us...

SantasLittleMonkeyButler · 11/09/2015 17:13

Emmy/Emi/Emie/Emme seems increasingly popular here (Midlands).

Other babies I know of born in the last 12 months are;

Boys

George
William
Harry
Reid
Billy

Girls

Imogen
Isla
Amber
Seren
Sienna x 3

At toddler groups (so a bit older, but pre-school) there are a lot with Ell in somewhere - so Ella/Bella/Ellie/Isabelle/Isabella/Eleanor etc. Also Lily, Amelia/Emelia, Amelie, Katie and Emma. Boys of around 2/3/4 are almost always either Oscar, Jack, Oliver or Harry.
