Harold or Rufus?

Expecting DC2. DS is called Edmund. I like Rufus for a boy. DH likes Harold and thinks it would be better to have 2 boys with Saxon names rather than one Saxon and one Norman origin (he's a proud Fenlander). Our surname is double-barrelled.

Rufus. Harold Bishop ruined Harold for me.

Ladypug · 26/08/2015 16:34

Rufus - gorgeous name!

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 26/08/2015 16:46

Harold! Please no. This is not a name that I can take seriously at all.

Rufus is great but if you have to look for another name what about Oswin? I like Randolph but I suppose there's a risk of people calling him Randy. Sad

Sophronia · 26/08/2015 16:49

I actually prefer Harold, I've never been keen on Rufus.

mrstweefromtweesville · 26/08/2015 16:51

Rufus? Chaka Khan, Chaka Khan...

Harold is a fine old name. One of the few which needs to be shortened, to Harry. Excellent.

CakeRattleandRoll · 26/08/2015 16:52

Rufus. (Really like Edmund btw.)

SoftBlocks · 26/08/2015 16:55

Rufus.

Squooshed · 26/08/2015 16:59

I honestly can't think of one positive thing about the name Harold.

What about Roderick if you're set on a Saxon name? It's far less awful than Harold.

Or Sexwulf? There's a showtopper of a name!

Footle · 26/08/2015 17:07

I like Harald, which is pretty Nordic and possibly the original form. It looks more interesting than Harold. How about Eric ? I've also known two Herewards, and you can't get more fenny than that.

Bonywasawarriorwayayix · 27/08/2015 06:27

Hmm. Harald sounds better. Harold Bishop has ruined the name for me too tbh.
I love Oswin but it wouldn't work with our surname.

Please not Harold!!

fleurdelacourt · 27/08/2015 12:01

anything but Harold...

Junosmum · 31/08/2015 01:23

Love Rufus- it's on our short short list! I love Edmund but oh not so keen. I also like eben, but again oh not so keen. Saxon names are great. But I'm not keen on Harold!

Packergator · 31/08/2015 02:12

My Rufus is a week old today, so I'm a bit biased! Grin

WhyCantIuseTheNameIWant · 31/08/2015 08:59

I prefer rufus, but it depends if you shorten names?

Eddy and Harry are great, with Edmund and Harold for formals.

I know a Harold (6ish) who goes by Harry.

Also met a rufus (3or4) who got called roo or roobes. Roo is ok, but roobes was girly. Especially as he had pink shoes on. I think his mum even called him ruby.

BlueBananas · 31/08/2015 09:03

Rufus is a dogs name

Helenluvsrob · 31/08/2015 09:12

Harold is great but only if you are happy for him to be known as harry as it will happen even as a baby.

Like rufus but if he isn't Ginger it'll seem wrong at least to me. Love hereward.

reuset · 31/08/2015 10:57

I like that you're bearing in mind the Saxon and Norman politics of the day Grin

I think Harold is wonderful. Really good solid name, and works with Edmund (I'd suspect you of being historians or some such). Rufus wouldn't be so bad, it was only William's nick name after all, not an obvious Norman name.

reuset · 31/08/2015 10:59

I know a Harold who always goes by Harold, it's never shortened. Though it's more probable it will be Harry, or Hal.

SmugairleRoin · 31/08/2015 14:53

I can't take either of the names seriously tbh. Rufus is too doggy and Harold...well it's just wet.
If I had to pick one...Rufus. But reluctantly.

Now Sexwulf, there's a name! Grin

Packergator · 06/09/2015 23:22

I've never known a single dog called Rufus. Most dogs I know are called 'Max' or 'Sam', but people don't seem to bat an eyelid at those names for their children! Grin

Packergator · 06/09/2015 23:23

(And Sexwulf is epic, I concur!)

BoneyBackJefferson · 06/09/2015 23:25

Be excellent to each other

Harold or Rufus?
Packergator · 07/09/2015 03:50

Watching Bill & Ted again was the clincher for us, I have to say...

EmpressMatilda · 09/09/2015 22:00

My DS2 is a Rufus. It's a great name and we'be had a lot of positive comments about it. I am not so keen on Harold but don't think it's awful. Edmund is a lovely name (we couldn't use it with our surname).
