What do you think of these boys names? Girls names seem so much easier!

Alexander (prob nn Alec)
Edward
Edwin
Zachary
Toby
Frederick (nn Freddie)
Evan
Eben
Nicolas
Laurence (like Laurie but is it a bit girly?)
Benjamin
Lucas
Marcus
Hamish (love it but is it too scottish, SE and no scots connection)

Also any suggestions?

Love Eben

Alexander - The Great. Good strong name
Edward - I have an Edward, he's the only one in the school & there's no teasing or anything associated with the name. Its a classic!
Edwin - too old fashioned for me
Zachary - I like, nn Zak? I like that too.
Toby - a bit meh
Frederick - Freddie is my dad's dog's name
Evan - I don't have a Welsh ancestry so wouldn't choose it
Eben - never heard of it
Nicolas - I LOVE Nicholas, was my second name choice after Edward & DS2's name :)
Laurence - I know an adult Laurence, its not too girly imo
Benjamin - too frequent for my taste
Lucas - is OK
Marcus - is OK
Hamish - too odd if no Scottish heritage

To add to your list, do you like Max?

BlackberryandNettle · 20/08/2015 15:08

Thanks, funnily enough Max was on the list but have actually ruled it out as it flows badly with our surname

Alexander (prob nn Alec)- really like, quite popular round here (usually nn Alex though)
Edward- like, prefer nn Ed to Teds/Teddie etc.
Edwin- really dislike, bit stuffy and not a strong name IMO
Zachary -like but love the nn Zach
Toby- really dislike, see it as a weak name
Frederick (nn Freddie)- good, like the nn
Evan- not keen
Eben- not keen
Nicolas- quite like nn Nick but Nicolas will always be Knicker-less to me no I am not still 10yo
Laurence (like Laurie but is it a bit girly?) not a fan of Laurence - know one (20s) and he is called Loz. Laurie prob is a bit girly for me (but so is Toby as I went to school with a girl one!)
Benjamin- like. Love nn Ben
Lucas- ok
Marcus- prefer Mark
Hamish (love it but is it too scottish, SE and no scots connection)- not keen and yes probably if no Scottish connection

So my favourite is Zachary but only if you use nn Zach! Otherwise Alexander, Edward or Frederick

Other names: Nathanial (Nate), Max, Louis, James, Joshua, Daniel.

Alexander (prob nn Alec) - love it, my favourite boy's name and the one we are 99% going to use if bump is a boy but I prefer Alex to Alec
Edward - love it, considered it as well
Edwin - not so keen, bit too old fashioned
Zachary - ok but very American sounding
Toby - really don't like, it's a bit too cutesy/dog's name!
Frederick (nn Freddie) - like Freddie for a little boy, not so sure if it suits a grown man though
Evan - quite like
Eben - quite like but the only connotation I have of this name is the lead character in 30 Days of Night which is a brilliant film but not exactly cheerful and he meets a rather horrible end!
Nicolas - really like, lovely name, although would spell Nicholas
Laurence (like Laurie but is it a bit girly?) - not keen, he may end up with nn Larry rather than Laurie which is a bit girly
Benjamin - nice name
Lucas - nice name
Marcus - really don't like, just don't like the way it sounds
Hamish (love it but is it too scottish, SE and no scots connection) - nice name but would be odd if you have no Scottish connection

Most of what I would have also suggested already has been, but what about James?

BlackberryandNettle · 21/08/2015 15:39

Thanks Serena and NotAll, good to have lots of opinions. Do like the name James, we have a close friend with one so would only use it if loved above all others!

Alexander, Zachary, Toby, Nicolas, Benjamin - All nice enough. too bland for me but that's just my taste. I just think 'nice' in the way that nice is average and a bit forgettable.
Edward/Edwin - Go with Edward or if you want to go different, Edison.
Frederick (nn Freddie)
Evan, Eben - Like both a lot. Prefer Eben but I think it will get mistaken for Evan all the time.
Laurence - is it a bit girly? Not in my book. I like it. Its a bit differet.
Lucas - I have an irrational unexplained hatred for. I don't know anyone with the name and I like George Lucas.
Marcus - Just have Mark or Marc and have done with it.
Hamish - No. Unless you wear tartan it can't be pulled off.

Thinking about your inner would be Scot...
James?
Elliot?
Fraser?
Andrew or Drew?
Ethan?
Logan?
Robert?
Scott?!
or erm definitely not Scottish
Reuben?

smokedgarlic · 21/08/2015 15:50

Marcus is beautiful

RiverTam · 21/08/2015 15:52

Evan is my favourite. Zachary is nice but I hate hate hate Zac!

Cookie122 · 21/08/2015 20:13

i like evan Grin

BlueChampagne · 25/08/2015 16:42

Like Alexander, Nicholas, Marcus, Laurence and Lucas.

How about Anthony or Conrad?

SmugairleRoin · 26/08/2015 17:25

Not Hamish unless you're VERY Scottish.

Marcus, Edward, Lucas, Laurence all nice.

Lachlan, Fiachra (if you've an Irish connection), Ronan, Michael? I do really love Idris too but unsure if it's too like Mr Elba!

Iliveinalighthousewiththeghost · 26/08/2015 18:10

Nicholas is lovely and surely due a come back
