Hello
We are due our first baby next month and we have somehow managed to finally agree on a name - Aidan. DH is half Irish so we thought it is a good one. I'm not sure whether the names goes with our surname though - it is short, begins with A and rhymes with "Saxon". Also, we can't decide on a middle name. I want it to have a special meaning and I've been looking at names meaning "gift from God" or similar but it's difficult to find one that sounds good with our surname. So my questions are:

  • What do you think of Aidan "Saxon"? Not sure if it "flows" at all..
  • Any suggestions on a middle name that sounds nice and has the meaning of "gift from God" or similar?

Personally I wouldn't use Aidan "Saxon" as I'm not a fan of the double initials and it sounds too similar for my taste but I don't think its an issue for others.

How about Michael for middle name?

Aidan Michael "S"Axon actually flows quite well.

It means gift of god in Hebrew apparently.

Flywheel · 12/08/2015 12:16

I think it goes well with your surname. Agree that Michael sounds good, or Matthew.

marinacortina · 12/08/2015 12:59

If the surname is like Saxon without the S, I don't think Aidan goes well. It sounds a bit like 'ad an accident.

SmugairleRoin · 12/08/2015 13:17

The thing with middle names is that you often don't actually use them...so in daily life he'd still be Aidan Saxon, no matter if it's different on the birth cert. Which I do think is too similar a sound.

If you are looking for an Irish name, how about Fiachra, Conor, Finan, Liam, Cathal, Donnchadh, Eoin, Oisin...you have lots of options!

Ewan/Euan -

I like Aidan but I don't think it flows well with your surname.

CakeRattleandRoll · 19/08/2015 14:28

Nathaniel means "God has given" if you wanted a longer mn.

switchitoff · 19/08/2015 15:41

No, I don't think the two names flow well. I was going to suggest similar names like Hayden and Rohan, but they don't seem to go either.

I like the pp's suggestion of Nathaniel (Nate, Nat) - what about that as a first name?

Dadado · 19/08/2015 20:41

Jonathan - means by grace of God
John - ditto
Sean - irish for John
Dominic - of the Lord

Cheburashka · 23/08/2015 11:59

Thank you everyone. I know Aidan doesn't flow too well but we can't think of another name that we like.. :/ Our two other options were Ryan (but hubby not keen) and Liam (we are both ok with it but like Aidan more).
In terms of middle names, thank you for your suggestions! I like Matthias and Samuel, and on a separate note really like Aidan George but then his initials would be AGA...

Aidan Matthew "Saxon"

temporarilyjerry · 24/08/2015 14:23

Initials AGA - not an issue.

spiderlight · 24/08/2015 15:06

I love Aidan - very nearly used it myself. Realistically, he'll just be Aidan 99.9% of the time - he'll only be Aidan Surname out loud when being called in to see the dentist etc. We ended up with alliterative initials for DS and in 8 1/2 years it has never been an issue.
