Maison (Mason) and other names with spellings you may not expect?

Just got a party invite from one of DS' fellow mindees. I also knew his name is Mason but it turns out that they spell it Maison. I thought it may be a typo but I checked with the CM and she said that's how it's spelled. Probably is especially odd for me as I'm part French, so to be, it reads as 'house' in French. I know the nameMason probably has construction origins too but I do wonder if people unknowingly mis-spell names or whether they are just trying to be 'different'. Either way, he's going to spenf a lifetime correcting the spelling of that one.
Anyone else got other examples of strangely spelled names?
I also know a Camron.....

Twodogs that is hysterical. I just went on her Wikipedia and it was edited yesterday. I'm willing to bet the edit was Emily to Emilie. Absolutely brilliant.

Pinkball75 · 14/08/2015 10:28

I know a Marliey. Bonkers.

Pinkball75 · 14/08/2015 10:28

Oh, and a Sharn and a Titarnia Confused

EmNetta · 14/08/2015 13:49

Once knew an Anthony, with a "th" sound in the middle; never knew how to say it myself.

GinAndSonic · 14/08/2015 14:17

Anthony always has a "th" sound in the middle Confused

Breezy1985 · 14/08/2015 14:49

A very close family member called her children Lileigh and Jaymz. I was Hmm and Shock

badtime · 14/08/2015 15:14

Anthony usually (not always) has a 't' sound in the middle in England. In Ireland and America it usually has a 'th' sound (but I don't know about other regions).

AuntieDee · 14/08/2015 15:23

I work in a hospital blood bank and these oddly spelled names cause serious delays in processing samples as they always come down spelled 'wrongly' and we have to reject them :(

CarlaJones · 14/08/2015 15:28

I can see how if you'd never learned French at school you might think Maison was an ok way to spell it, but the problem is that most people did at least basic French at school and "maison" is one of the first things you learn!

EmNetta · 14/08/2015 15:32

Thanks badtime, I've missed this in both Ireland and America, so thought it strange here. And only the one.

MadeFromTools · 14/08/2015 15:37

That Scottish Records list of names is an abomination Confused I find some of these ridiculous spellings almost offensive, do these parents not realise that are naming an actual child Hmm

I adore the name Sophia, both spellings (Sofia).

villainousbroodmare · 14/08/2015 15:49

I like Marvellous and Kiwi. For, maybe, a pair of parrots.

ROARmeow · 15/08/2015 18:51

I met an Alivia (pron. Olivia) the other day Hmm

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 15/08/2015 19:03

I thought Rauridh was an old, Irish name?

There's another baby name thread running,me here the OP is looking for a name for her forthcoming baby, sibling to Luchia. She is considering, amongst others, Mondeo for a boy, and Corvette, Belgravia, Charmella or Cadence for a girl.

She has not taken too kindly to people telling her that her dd's name shouldn't have an 'h' in it, that Italians would pronounce it Loo-kee-ah (her DH is part Italian, and chose the spelling - he doesn't speak much Italian), and that it sounds a bit too much like lochia, though she does seem to be moving away from the car names (she likes cars) and the wackier efforts like Belgravia (she likes that because she's been there).

villainousbroodmare · 15/08/2015 19:06

Ruairí or Ruairidh is, not as spelt above!

Twinkie1 · 15/08/2015 19:09

Jaxon WTAF?

Convinced parents had misspelt Jason.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 15/08/2015 19:12

Ahh - I see, villainous - thank you! my dad wanted me to be called Ruairidh, but I have a horrible suspicion he wasn't going to spell it right - I dodged a bullet!

WhyCantIuseTheNameIWant · 15/08/2015 23:33

Ericy.
Several years ago at a birthday party I was introduced to a boy (7/8ish) called ericy.
No idea on spelling, as he went off to enjoy the party.
Seemed like a combination of Eric for the start and Ricky for the end.

GinAndSonic · 16/08/2015 22:56

Im in Newcastle and every anthony ive met who has been local has had a "th" sound. Except maybe one. I know a couple of southern anthonys and one has a "th" and the other a "t"

FranKatzenjammer · 16/08/2015 23:05

I believe Ember is an actual name, not a misspelling of Amber. It's quite pretty, I think.

Australian Anthonys have a TH sound too.

EmmaWoodlouse · 16/08/2015 23:27

I have a distant relative called Megan pronounced Meegan - she's not Australian. She's quite old and got her name before it became popular so I'm guessing her parents had never heard it spoken out loud when they chose it.

Unusual spellings I've come across include Jaymie, Jaimiee, Shayne, Gari, Luci, Clair, Sofiah, Sofie, Kacee, Calib, Dayzee, Cathrine and Cathreen.

But if you think about it, a lot of spellings that are thought of as valid alternatives now started out as slightly unusual variants, like Steven, Phillip or Kathryn. Maybe some of these ones that seem odd to us now will gain acceptance eventually.

Fizrim · 16/08/2015 23:32

I knew an American who had a boy named Jaxon, I had to say it aloud to get Jackson. Or am I the only one who starts pronouncing names in my head when I see them written down?

I would totally say may-zon for Maison and I also knew it was house. He's going to hear that a lot. I would pronounce Anthony with a t sound not a th. I would pronounce Channel as Channel, not Chanel.

Cadence is the penguin DJ in Club Penguin, surely?

Peacheykeen · 16/08/2015 23:43

Ayva , Destainee Hmm

BellMcEnd · 17/08/2015 06:18

Some corkers on here!

I know a Maylo - pronounced Milo and DS1 was at preschool with a Kam'Ronn Hmm

TemperanceRisesWithWren · 17/08/2015 21:05

Dollie
Rubiee
Frankee
Charlee - all from the same family

Jaime - a girl, pronounced Jamie.

Abygayle. Now an adult but name spelling chosen by dad as he liked the loops when writing the name!
