Maison (Mason) and other names with spellings you may not expect?

Just got a party invite from one of DS' fellow mindees. I also knew his name is Mason but it turns out that they spell it Maison. I thought it may be a typo but I checked with the CM and she said that's how it's spelled. Probably is especially odd for me as I'm part French, so to be, it reads as 'house' in French. I know the nameMason probably has construction origins too but I do wonder if people unknowingly mis-spell names or whether they are just trying to be 'different'. Either way, he's going to spenf a lifetime correcting the spelling of that one.
Anyone else got other examples of strangely spelled names?
I also know a Camron.....

How does Skallet become Scarlet? The double l shortens the vowel sound, surely - and there's no r. Doesn't it just rhyme with pallet? Confused

pinkgirly - Brighton/Hove?

PageNotFound404 · 07/08/2015 14:20

I know a Jorja too, plus a Maisey (which doesn't change the pronunciation but looks odd written down) and a Kaytlynn.

A dawsion, pronounced Dawson.I always want to call him daw-shun.

marmaladegranny · 07/08/2015 14:32

DS used to be at primary school with KT - which was bit sad as her sisters all had 'Anne-Marie', 'Elizabeth-Jane' type names….

SirChenjin · 07/08/2015 14:33

How on earth did they come up with that spelling to make Dawson? Confused That's pronounced Daw-shun, as you say.

SirChenjin · 07/08/2015 14:34

Surname wasn't Tunstall, wasn it marmalade? Grin

Finola1step · 07/08/2015 14:38

Katelyn, D'Jon, Kourtnee, Kamron.

marinacortina · 07/08/2015 14:49

How are you supposed to pronounce Keren? I've never met one, so I might have guessed at something similar to Ciaran.

Even Karen can be a bit of a minefield. I would say it's normally psaid with a short a, but the head at my old school called all the Karens "Kah-ren". And the parents of one small Karen at my primary school pronounced it "Kair-en".

iklboo · 07/08/2015 15:18

A girl in DS's nursery was called Ribekah (Rebecca).

SirChenjin · 07/08/2015 15:20

Witch is that Ez-may? Isn't that how Esmai would be pronounced? Confused

LapsedPacifist · 07/08/2015 15:21

'Keren' is Cornish - there is a character in the 'Poldark' novels with that name.

I know of a 'Maison' - his mum once admitted they just didn't know when he was born how it was normally spelt and were unaware it was the French word for 'house'.

nancy75 · 07/08/2015 15:28

Ds goes to school with a parissee, pronounced Paris, just difficult to spell for the sake of it

LineRunner · 07/08/2015 15:35

Girl as school called Karen claimed it was pronounced 'Kareen'. Which was news to her parents when they found out.

I know loads of women actually who have given themselves 'interesting' spellings of their own perfectly normal names, e.g. Kayt, Nikkii, Niké, Joolie.

SirChenjin · 07/08/2015 15:37

My cousin has just got engaged to a woman who's done that Line - it sets my teeth on edge. She's a bit "I'm mad, me" so I guess the 'interesting' spelling is about right.

Groovee · 07/08/2015 15:42

Ailee is usually an alternative spelling to Eilidh. It's pronounced Aylee or Hayley without the H.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 07/08/2015 15:43

WitchofScots · 07/08/2015 19:33

Angelto5 · 07/08/2015 19:44
