We can't decide between Maggie or Mabel for dd3 loved both for dd2 & we still love them. Also love Esme. Other dds are Molly & Matilda. Dh is a bit meh about another M name but I like it. Opinions please x

Pauline Fowler Grin if that isn't enough to stop the twee M names, I don't know what is. Don't do it OP, people WILL judge.

CheerfulYank that's my dd, honestly thought we'd invented it!! She's 'just' M-R though, not Margaret

Henritta hopefully this thread is enough to persuade you otherwise, we both come from a long line of committed socialists

Yes Henrietta

The Maggie I know's parents are labour party members, from a long line of party activists, unionists and other troublemakers Wink

Mabel has become a bit popular...Maggie could start a new trend.

I prefer Mabel :)

I think both are ok. I wouldn't use either, but that's just personal taste. If I were forced to choose one, I'd pick Mabel I think, because Maggie can sometimes sound a bit harsh.

My burning question is - why is this thread stickied? It's been at the top of active convos for days now. Is this a new baby names initiative?

Ha! And when I finally post the question, it un-stickied! Who knew? Must have been a glitch.

Why spoil a lovely name like Margaret with the nickname Maggie. It's so harsh sounding.
I know two Maggies and both are lovely.

Well it's good to hear the troublemakers are reclaiming the name!

Plenty of lovely abbreviations for Margaret, though. No need to limit oneself to Maggie. Grin

I can't believe someone has suggested Maud Shock. I'm not a great fan of Maggie or Mabel but they are a million times nicer than Maud.

I like Esme best OP.

We've got a Mabel. She's lovely :)

Does get people commenting, tho. We either get "ooh, that's lovely" or "oh. Is that a family name?". No one has vomited yet.

My grandmother (89yo) said 'that's a very below stairs name". Gave us great pleasure when an upstairs Mabel turned in Downtown Abbey... ;)

Academic I get "is that a...family name?" with my Margaret/Maggie and also my third DC, a boy named William Oliver. One of the nurses who helped deliver him was shocked that we just chose Oliver because we liked it :)

cheerful I always take the "family name?" as people hating the name, but being polite enough not to actually say it (which is more than can be said for some views expressed here...) :)

I don't much mind what people think of a name, but sad to see some quite prejudiced comments expressed. Maybe if people saw a little girl attached, they wouldn't say things like "weak/granny/hate it/etc...". Maybe it's just the Internet. Or just I'm feeling a bit under the weather.

Hope I haven't doomed our Mabel to a lifetime of pre-judgement because of her name... :( it was carefully considered as a name...

I would go for the Margaret - Peggy version rather than Maggie (not keen on Maggie )there are a few mabels around here and i've got used to it but first time thought -too too granny (still not keen)
know a lovely Martha (in her 20's)
could your Matilda be a tilly?
would probably change the M theme though there are so many lovely names

Going out on a limb here, and ready for a namin' flamin' but Maybelle is kind of cute - not as an alternative spelling for Mabel, but as a different name altogether....

I was researching a friend's family history recently and a sibling of one of her ancestors was called Katie Mabel. I thought the combination was really pretty.

Esme. Sorry I really dislike Mabel too but quite like Maggie. Personally I wouldn't do the three M thing but I know of a family with a Matilda, Madeleine and Millicent if that helps Grin
