Girl's names with strong connotations

I've just found out that we're expecting a girl (was convinced it was a boy) and realise that we haven't given any serious thought to girl's names! She started life as a twin and survived, despite her sibling not making it, so we are looking for a name which implies strength, bravery and courage. I love Scarlet but it has been vetoed. Any suggestions? Thank you!

Thanks! Matilda is nice. I've been looking for courageous women in history with nice names - Rosa is a good one, but DP isn't sold. The search continues...

Diana (goddess of the hunt)
Sunna (means 'the Sun' in Old High German)
Astraea (goddess of justice)
Iris (goddess of rainbows)
Rhea (goddess of nature)
Selene (goddess of the moon)
Dinah (judged, vindicated: in the Bible Dinah is the daughter of Jacob, she is raped and then avenged and freed by her brothers, so not the most inspiring story. But a lovely name)

Ahemily · 17/07/2015 14:13

Leona and Selene are now also in the hat! Thank you!

Kate (see Alfred Lord Tennyson's fab poem) feisty and strong

froggyjump · 17/07/2015 22:17

cakerattleandroll that is almost exactly my dream girls name list! (have 3 DS's) I wouldn't have had Miranda, but would have had Ramona, Zoe and Kate on the list as well as all of yours.

CakeRattleandRoll · 18/07/2015 17:07

froggy you clearly have excellent taste! My absolute favourite was Miriam but DH vetoed. My other two favourites (Miranda and Yasmin) were taken by other family members. We also had Zoe on the list, and ended up choosing an 'international' version of Kate/Katherine.
