If you don't like the abbreviation Will then just put Billy on his BC. If you put William on he could opt to use Will and it's his name so you couldn't stop him.

William.

Your DS may decide that he likes the more grown up nickname Will when he is older. As it will be his name, giving him option when he's older is the nice thing to do.

BothEndsBurning · 17/07/2015 10:32

William.

Everyone knows that Billy is a form of William. Even if you short-change him with Billy, he could still choose to call himself Will if he wanted to. Give him a proper full name, not just a nn.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 17/07/2015 10:40

Billy, although I really dislike it.

William is too easily shortened to Will if you don't want that.

MadMum2015 · 17/07/2015 10:45

William, you give him the option that way but chances are he won't change from Bill / Billy.

reuset · 17/07/2015 10:49

William

mamaswabey · 17/07/2015 10:49

William. It just gives him more options when he's older. He might like to apply for jobs as William, for example. You can still call him Billy.

EmmaGellerGreen · 17/07/2015 10:53

William. A friend nearly used Billy and her DS was Billy until he went to school. Then he was Bill for a while , now he is Will. He loathes his "pathname" Billy.

villainousbroodmare · 17/07/2015 10:53

It's his name, not yours, so who knows what he'll like? William gives him options.

TinyManticore · 17/07/2015 10:54

William. He might hate Billy when he gets older.

EmmaGellerGreen · 17/07/2015 10:54

"babyname" not "pathname".

DoloresLandingham · 17/07/2015 10:56

Please please please put William, and give your adult DS the choice.

GilbertBlytheWouldGetIt · 17/07/2015 10:56

William is a lovely name (biased). I'd put that on his BC, then he has the choice as he grows up, as pp said.

Seriouslyffs · 17/07/2015 11:02

William. Definitely! It's always better to go for the formal version and use NN. Especially in this case as it can be strongly partisan. Both my DDs are called something different (obvious short forms) of their given names, they even have different initials, it's never caused any problems.

Sophronia · 17/07/2015 12:51

Definitely William! I know a William who goes by Billy, and no-one ever calls him Will.

barbecue · 17/07/2015 16:02

William
