Irish boys names - opinion on short list pls!

Not long to go and still struggling to find an Irish boys name we both agree on. This is the short list;

1. Lorcan
2. Oscar
3. Eoin

Thoughts please on all 3 and be brutal!

Btw DD is named Aoife.

Are you in the uk? people will not see Oscar as irish.

love Lorcán - just posted on the other boys' name thread about that. It's very portable too - easy to pronounce and write wherever he ends up!

Lorcan is my favourite. Oscar is VERY popular, and I'm not keen on Eoin.

Aoife and Eoin. Lots of extra letters there (don't get offended, I spent 10 years in Ireland and love the place, so I'm not being boorish).
Oscar, as in Wilde? Hmm.
That leaves Lorcan.

Oscar is a contraction of something like deer and friend (Os, Cara). It's too popular.

Oscar is an old Irish name - he was the grandson of Fionn Mac Cumhail in Irish mythology... But we are in the UK so I think a lot of people will assume it's Scandinavian :(

I like Oscar best, followed by Lorcan. Like the mythology behind Oscar. Not a fan of Eoin.

But agree if you're in the UK no one will think of Oscar as an irish name.

Yes that's right Os+cara. Is it really that popular? I've only met one toddler so far and it slipped from no. 7 in 2013 to no. 14 in 2014.. Fingers crossed it keeps sliding!

Lorcan was no.1 and if DD had been DS we would definitely have used it but I've gone off it a bit since - I'm really trying to love it again but it sounds a bit Lord of the Rings?! And doesn't go very with Aoife

Like Oscar, dislike Eoin (but prefer the Eoghan spelling) Lorcan no its like a sound made in your throat. Sorry!

It is that popular yes. And they always have a brother called Felix (or maybe, Milo)

But I think most Oscars are in their teens now, so use it if you want to! I think other names are more likely to be repeated. Tbh, Lorcan is probably more 'of the year 2015'

Out of your list i prefer Eoin. Lorcan second. Oscar way too popular and i really dislike they way it sounds in most English accents but thats personal preference.

I don't like Lorcan much at all.

Eoin is fine if a bit middle of the road, and most British people wouldn't have clue how to pronounce it.

Oscar is definitely the best, the only thing that would put me off is its current huge popularity.

I didn't know Oscar was an Irish name.... Certainly not considered as such by anyone I know

Eoin is my favourite and I think it goes best with Aoife. In the UK there will inevitably be pronunciation/spelling issues, but you've already got an Aoife so you'll be used to that! Eoin has become more familiar to people in the UK recently thanks to the writer Eoin Colfer & the cricketer Eoin Morgan.

Lorcan is also nice & would be my second choice, with Oscar a very distant third.

Lorcan must be one of those names that sounds cool to people outside of Ireland. I've always thought of it as a Nigel sort of name.

This is solved by saying it aloud once for them to hear

Ha. You really think it works like that? Some will only need to hear it once, other people will take a while to connect the sound to the name written down, other people continue to be a bit confused.

It always amazes me when Irish name threads come up and people say "no-one will know how to pronounce it". there is a world of names out there from all different origins, should we really be restricted by a few people in england not having the wit or manners to ask a second time for a pronunciation? I they cant pronounce it after two goes of hearing it then that really is their problem and not for the name owner to worry about. Most other people will manage it.

I'm not saying people shouldn't choose an Irish name because other people might have problems pronouncing it. I'm merely saying as an Irish person, with an Irish name, living in the UK that it's something to keep in mind.

It's fine for you to say it's their problem but constantly being asked to spell and pronounce your name can get very boring very quickly. And likewise I'm sure other people may not mind a jot having daily chats about their name.

Fair enough. I thought you were basically saying "dont bother, english people wont be able to say it" which would discount a shitload of names from a lot of different places, including some english ones actually!
