How awful an idea is Jack?

I know it's a super popular name, but has anyone used it? How many boys would be 'Jack' in nursery school? Is it a bad idea going for a really common name?

DH has decided he really likes it.

Totally depends where you live. I don't actually know any Jacks! (I have 3 children). Hard to believe...well, maybe one who is my mum's friend's son and he's about 13. We live in a very mixed area so there's a massive mix of names where we are. I have an Oliver and I love it. It really suits him. There's none in his school, 1 in the infant school below him, so there will be 2 in the whole school next year (3 classes per year).

Is it a really popular name at the moment though? I work with new parents and I am yet to come across a Jack in 4 years....or a Jake which I really like.

The ones that come up all the time are Oliver, George, Alfred, William, Harry, Joshua.

I really like Jack. My baby would have been Jack if we had a boy.
I wouldn't worry if it's popular, I think my dd's name is popular but I don't mind.

I think its popularity is waning, like Alfie (thankfully), and it's not a faddy name like Alfie, so I'd feel happier using it now than five years ago.

Still very popular but has been popular for at least 20 years now so doesn't feel like a fad name to me.

Unfortunately it wasn't great with our surname, but I think it's a fantastic first name, especially if he'll have an unusual last name. Maybe not Jack Smith, as jacks have been so popular for 18+ years, there are a lot around.

If you like it, use it - don't worry about popularity! Whether or not it's currently in (and I think less so than say, 10 years ago) it's a classic, not a fad, so really won't date.

I know a couple under 4, they are both lovely and I really like the name :)

I love it. None at my kids' nurseries.

I personally can't stand the name. It became too over used too quickly. 20 yearS ago you'd have been forgiven for thinking it was the only boys name on the planet, but it's dying out now and to be fair. All the Jacks I've known have been lovely.
So yes go for it

I prefer Johnnie or John.

Jack is just so, so over used.

I have a Jack and he is super well behaved and really really king and loving - not a mobster at all! Hes the only one Ive met so far (although named after my grandpa) but have seen a few on tv. I think its a lovely name and it really suits him.

The mobster comment makes me think of Jacks being dressed as tiny little Bugsy Malones.

I live in Ireland and it's been the Number 1 name here for the last 10 years or so. I know lots of them. I find it frustrating when I hear of another baby being called Jack. Do their parents have no imagination? Their child will be in a class with about 7 other Jacks. Nice one!

I know two under two. I know lots of teenagers with this name. I'm not overly keen, it's boring to my ears.

I love it ???? It is my son's middle name - he is 7 and has one Jack in his class. My daughter is 5 and has one Jack in her class too. I think it is a non-faddy name that is lovely for both children and adults.

I like it, don't know many small Jacks. However my dh discounted it as traditionally it is a NN for John. Personally though I think it's well established in its own right now though.
