Darach

ELCS scheduled for two weeks tomorrow and we still don't have a name for DS2... DH really likes Darach (Scots Gaelic name meaning oak- we are Scottish and both have Gaelic names, we live in an area of Scotland where very few people speak Gaelic though so can't go for anything too difficult to spell/pronounce), I think it is growing on me but there's a couple of things I'm not sure about. When I googled it one of the first things that came up was a TV programme called Teen Wolf- apparently a darach is something unpleasant in that programme- we'd never heard of it before but we have neither a TV nor teenagers, is this an association that many people would make with the name? The other is how difficult it might be for non-Scots to pronounce. It's said Dar-akh (the kh sound like in loch) not sure how many people would struggle with this and call him Darack? Opinions please! Or other suggestions. Other names we've thought about are Theo, Torin, Tavis, Lewis (but too many Lewises about at the moment), Eoghan. DS1 is called Joel.

As a rule English people cannot say ch as in loch. Does that matter a lot to you? Never heard of the teen wolf thing.

I like it. But you're right about some ppl not being able to pronounce it correctly. But is that such a big deal? I've also never heard of the teen wolf thing.

I thought of the ritualistic murders and I don't watch Teen Wolf, but I'm 24 and I suppose it's (unfortunately) popular culture.

I think I'd watch season three (I think! Double check) and see how bad it is and if the association would put you off. There's no real way of knowing if people will still be making it when your baby is older, but Teen Wolf is pretty popular on social media and memes, so it's standing the test of time well at the moment.

How about the Irish version, Daragh? Or Darragh (can't remember which, sorry!) same meaning but just an 'ah' sound on the end. Gorgeous name.

I admit I'd probably fail in pronunciation and say Darack. It sounds like Derek now I've written that. Hmmm.

I prefer all the other names on your list to be honest. Except Eoghan, I have a cousin called Eoghan living in England who gets called Eugene/Yogin/Eggnog/Yugan......basically everything apart from his actual name.

Eoghan just isn't intuitive though .... I know it's like Owen, but I always want to say Egan (like the Irish surname).

Darach is much more "say as it's spelled" although we won't get the -ch exactly right.

Oh, and I have no idea what Teen Wolf is.

Great name, and much stronger than the Irish Daragh. Not many around either.

And wouldn't you prefer the Gaelic Eòghann rather than the Irish Eoghan?

I prefer the Irish Daragh/Daire, Darach is a bit guttural for my taste.

Wasn't the village in the awful Take the High Road called Glen Darach? Ashamed I know that!

I'm from NI so "get" the "ch" sound, but without it, it's close to Derek as pp said. I like Daithi , but pronunciation would be a bigger issue I fear!!

Crystal- it was Glendarroch! My great granny's friend was in Take The High Road for years on end, I never watched it though.
