What does Kitty say to you?

I think elegant, 1920s period drama, strong but feminine.

DH says Bunny a la Katie Price.

I am desperate to use it, but I've got some persuading to do. And he's made me wonder if I've got it completely wrong... Have I? What does it make you think?

This Cliff Richard reference is going right over my head. I'm not sure I want to Google it.

PenguinsandtheTantrumofDoom · 25/05/2015 11:08

I like it as a nickname for Catherine or Katya or Kathleen.

I think it is too frilly and twee as a sole given name. But I dislike that style of name generally.

RubyMay82 · 25/05/2015 11:09

The assistant manager at my wee ones nursery is called Kitty,
It's the first time I've ever met anyone called Kitty & I think it's a really cute name I like it !!

BestIsWest · 25/05/2015 11:13

I also had a great Aunt Kitty. She was indeed very glamorous in the 1920s.

She was also very beautiful as an older woman. She was very direct but very funny.

She often shortened it to Kit.

pinkje · 25/05/2015 11:16

Makes me think of the character in Brothers & Sisters, the US show. Calista Flockhart played her.

Notso · 25/05/2015 11:35

I like Kitty not keen on Kathleen or Katherine though.

Totally agree with DampAndRotten about the high court judge thing.

SuburbanRhonda · 25/05/2015 12:03

I'm old enough to remember when people chose a name for itself, rather than for what cute name it could be shortened to, so anything that sounds like a nickname would get a no from me.

But I have a DD who never shortens her three-syllable name, so what do I know? Smile

LeoandBoosmum · 25/05/2015 15:15

It says: My grandma's sister whose hairy chin used to give me the shivers when I was little. True.

SoupDragon · 25/05/2015 15:18

After I miaowed childishly, I think it's fine as a nickname but I wouldn't use it as a given name.

Wishful80smontage · 26/05/2015 02:58

Love it OP think of it in the same way as you- it's on my list for dc2 but my oh isn't keen either :(

undermythumb · 26/05/2015 03:47

The Lady Kitty Eleanor Spencer has Kitty as a given name and I think Giles Coren's daughter is a Kitty also.

Canyouforgiveher · 26/05/2015 03:57

If I were giving a shortened name as a full name, I'd far far rather Kit instead of Kitty.

ShadowFire · 26/05/2015 09:37

Kit sounds more masculine to me.

BlueEyedPersephone · 26/05/2015 09:42

Swallows and amazons -brilliant can always be Catherine or Kate later if she is not sure x

SuburbanRhonda · 26/05/2015 10:24

What, someone could be named Kitty at birth and then change to Catherine or Kate if they wanted to? Doesn't that involve deed poll or at least an announcement in the paper?

mrstowers · 26/05/2015 11:15

Really? Some people really have no idea with the reference to Cliff Richard? Do you live under a blanket?

Kitty to a childs peers will always be associated with Hello Kitty.

SillyStuffBiting · 26/05/2015 12:30

I must live under a blanket.

reuset · 26/05/2015 14:35

I think you have it right, kipper. 1920s elegance

Though I like it best for Katherine or Kathleen

Rox19 · 26/05/2015 14:43

Cliff Richard at elm guest house I'm afraid

SylvaniansAtEase · 26/05/2015 14:52

The more I see it written down the more I like it!

Kitty, but please short for Catherine - I know it's C not K, but the full name sounds so much lovelier with a C.

However if I had a Catherine, it would be Cate for short.

reuset · 26/05/2015 15:22

What's that about Cliff Richard? Sounds rather sinister

reuset · 26/05/2015 15:26

Thanks Google!

Have obviously been living under blanket, I didn't know that was Cliff's pseudonym. Though I have heard something of elm guest house I'm sure

OpheliaBitz · 26/05/2015 15:30

I think it's sweet for a little girl, but would probably make it a nn rather than have Kitty on the bc, so that she has the option to change to Kate/Kathy/Catherine/Kathleen/whatever when she's older if she wants.

It's not a name that translates well to adulthood IMO.

reuset · 26/05/2015 15:33

Cissy or Cecy might be nice vaguely similar alternatives to consider if they're to your taste. Short for Cecilia or Cecily though

Spydra · 26/05/2015 15:48

Katherine with a shortened version Kitty
