Arya?

Not sure if dc1 is a girl or boy yet but we've really struggled to agree on a girls name.

DH is sold on the name arya, he likes geeky names and it's the nicest one so far.

I've tentatively agreed because it is a lovely name, not too fluffy but is it a bit too game of thrones?

Hmm. Quite like it, but how will you feel if her character turns nasty/commits hideous crimes/gets bumped off in a spectacularly gory fashion in a future book? (I believe that Martin is still writing them.)

If you like it, go for it, but beware that it's likely to date fairly specifically to GoT in the future!

I like it!

Allalonenow · 06/05/2015 01:14

It gets a no from me, unless your surname is Stark.
What about Aphra instead?

IHeartKingThistle · 06/05/2015 01:19

This must be the 6th Arya thread this year! I'll say it. It would make you sound like a family of white supremacists.

Aria as a spelling would solve that problem!

BrockAuLit · 06/05/2015 01:57

Are you Aryan?

Lunastarfish · 06/05/2015 05:55

I think it is a lovely name but it's now very GOT and my concern with GOT names is that Arya may be lovely and sweet now but what about in the future? She might turn out to be more sadistic than Joffrey!

mammmamia · 06/05/2015 06:22

It's also an Indian name, there are LOADS of little Aryas where i live. No GoT link at all.

WeAreEternal · 06/05/2015 06:25

Are you going to be pronouncing it I-ah Or Ar-ia?

I know a few people who have an Arya and pronounce it both ways and people who have an Aria.

I think it's a lovely name either way, but it have liked it for years, it was on my name for ds(8) if he was a girl.
However, since GOT it is now becoming quite popular so I'm not sure if I would still use it.

Pooka · 06/05/2015 06:27

How would it be pronounced?

Ah-ria
A-wry-a
Arry-a

Mummybear8 · 07/05/2015 13:16

I think it's a beautiful name whether you pronounce it aye-a or aree-a and was obviously around before GoT. If you love it go for it! I'm having a boy or it would be on my list! X

carbolicsoaprocked · 07/05/2015 16:11

Never seen GoT but knowing there's a character in it called Arya would stop me using the name. I've always loved Aria however, and as it has a completely different (and lovely) meaning I'd still use that.

ltk · 07/05/2015 16:15

Would he consider Orla? Similar sound, no GOT link.

manicinsomniac · 07/05/2015 19:51

I love it.

Might be tempted to spell it Aria (like Pretty Little Liars) for the musical link though.

aoife24 · 08/05/2015 00:02

There's a character on Pretty Little Liars called Aria. I think that's pretty too.

Gralick · 08/05/2015 00:08

Arya or aren't ya?

^^ Reason I wouldn't choose this name Grin

Aria doesn't lend itself so easily to mispronunciation (people will call her "Area" but that ain't so bad.) Or Ariel, Arla, or even Air.

TerracottaTilesAreSlippy · 08/05/2015 16:18

^this

Tomodachi · 08/05/2015 16:29

I also read it like "Are ya?"

LorryHen · 09/05/2015 15:52

I'm the OP but I've had my own name change!

Found out today DC1 is a little boy so I won't be worrying about arya anymore!

I do like changing it to aria though and get the aryan/are ya things.

Gralick · 09/05/2015 18:18

Congratulations!

So it's Ari, Arun or Aran, then? Wink

pictish · 09/05/2015 18:19

No. Naming your kid after the current tv trend is naff. So sorry but it is.

LorryHen · 09/05/2015 18:20

Thanks grakick :) hahaha actually I think it will be Joel. Thinking of a boys name was extremely simple compared to girls names!

Allalonenow · 09/05/2015 19:52

Joel is a great choice!

CaptainAnkles · 09/05/2015 20:09

Congrats! Joel is a lovely name Smile

RattieofCatan · 09/05/2015 21:24

I love it, it has Persian links as well. I wouldn't use it because of GoTs though, totally would have done before that though!

Congratulations on the boy :)
